Australia Network, the international television service of the ABC has refreshed its identity and introduced a new slogan ‘From our world to yours’.

With the channel available in over 44 countries throughout the Asia Pacific region, the refresh needed cross cultural appeal, while also standing out in an already saturated television market.

The end result is a very fresh and contemporary on air look that perhaps our local ABC1 could learn a little from..

The one thing I hate about ABC News Breakfast. (Plus, all the stuff I like about it).

(9.5mb progressive)

ABC News Breakfast has been on air for about six months now, and the more I watch it, the more I find myself enjoying it.

It’s very much ‘radio on the television’, with rolling news, interviews, weather and quite literally radio on the television when they cross to interviews around the country being conducted on various ABC radio stations.

Available on the digital only ABC2, or streamed live online, its a fresh change from the infotainment formats adopted by its rivals. It presents itself as an honest and often frank outlet for news, with the daily look at the front pages of the papers often devolving into an interesting analysis of the media.

The programmes Twitter page; @breakfastnews has become essential tracking during the broadcast, with insight from the shows producer about whats coming up, whose running late, and what’s going on behind the scenes, it’s easily one of the first actually useful applications of Twitter I’ve seen a TV show use.

But now, back to the title of this post.. The one thing I hate about ABC News Breakfast is the entire branding of the programme, and its the one tip of my hat I’ll give to rival Sunrise. “ABC News Breakfast” is not only a clunky name, but the on-air design, sets and graphics don’t do the show any justice.

The whole thing needs a refresh, it could really look a lot better, because if there’s one thing we all know, people judge you on how you look, especially when your taking up 40 inches of space on my living room wall.

Another Freeview advert with not much to say.

It really shouldn’t be this hard a thing to sell, or this easily screwed up, but here we are again with Australia’s free to air broadcasters banding together to get us excited about the Freeview platform.

Something that will actually get people excited about Freeview? The impending launch of ABC3, SBS Two and whatever Nine and Seven are going to get around to broadcasting, not this ad.

Marc Fennell vs Television Idents.

Facebook friend, real world acquaintance, Triple J film critic, and all round good guy Marc Fennell has managed to sum up in six minutes, what this blog has been trying to say for over (oh my god, its been) four years.

Marc’s succinct and entertaining Charlie Brooker-esque take on all things television idents is a refreshing and fun look at the little known genre most people don’t even notice, but that we’re all strangely interested in.

(Also, Marc has a show at the Melbourne Comedy Festival, check it out.)

The Sci Fi Channel in Australia launched a new set of on air idents last week. Being the thematic channel that they are, these idents are very much “on message”, reflecting the channels programming, but also through the use of the CCTV concept, creating a strong and unified image for the channels brand.

Speaking of the channels brand, the Australian off shoot of Sci Fi are yet to commit to adopting the recently announced Syfy rebrand, which although heavily criticised, I personally think is one of the more elegant and creative name changes of late.

The free to air digital multichannel revolution may finally-perhaps-kinda be upon us. From March 26th the Ten Network will be the first of the commercial networks to launch a fully fledged 24/7 digital multichannel in the form of ONE, a sports dedicated free to air channel.

Ten’s decision to launch a whole new brand for the channel, instead of simply launching ‘Ten Sports’ seems to be working. The look and feel of ONE is very polished, contemporary and inviting, no surprise though from the only commercial channel that seems to have any idea about how to brand.

Portugal’s oldest television network RTP1, got itself a new on-air look last month, inspired by the channels clunky logo, and perhaps just a little by SimTower.

Surprisingly this ident is only a one off, but with such a unique concept, it could’ve so easily been expanded to include any variety of multi levelled environments…

Update: and it looks like they will be, with a new version making its debut this month, see second video above.

Running on-air from 1997 until 2002, the BBC One ‘Balloon’ idents where a brilliantly simple, and beautifully executed series encompassing all four nations of the United Kingdom with the use of one enormous hot air balloon.

England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales are each represented in the above compiles, with the balloon flying over such locations as the London Docklands, Eilean Donan Castle, Cardiff, and Snowdonia National Park.

The ‘Balloon’ idents were replaced by the ‘Rythm and Movement’ series in 2002, and eventually by the current ‘Circle’ collection in 2006.

After the jump is the ‘National Anthem’ edition of the ident, played at closing time on BBC One for a brief time in 1997.
