Portugal’s oldest television network RTP1, got itself a new on-air look last month, inspired by the channels clunky logo, and perhaps just a little by SimTower.

Surprisingly this ident is only a one off, but with such a unique concept, it could’ve so easily been expanded to include any variety of multi levelled environments…

Update: and it looks like they will be, with a new version making its debut this month, see second video above.

As a start RTP is not only the oldest television in Portugal, but is the public broadcast television of Portugal. In that way should represent a solid ident not dependable on self idiosyncrasies. Should transmit a nation ident, a position, a vision of a country. After that as to communicate. And to communicate you a to see and understand. It is nice of you to remember Simtower and all Sims Universe. But in 12 seconds it is quite impossible to see anything, also because 4:3 resolution in any tradition TV set (720×576). I can understand technically it is amassing and amusing but we should never lose the first intent, COMMUNICATE.

It’s not a one-off. It is, in fact, one of five idents. The second has already been released. And the third is on its way.

That second ident is the most chaotic – positively chaotic – I’ve ever seen. I’d like to think of it as satire, but oh well. Naked boy on the stage and control room girl with burning hair.
