This new Channel 4 ident doesn’t quite follow the same formula as most of the others in the series, but makes creative use of the “4”.

Forgive me if you’re not as into The Killers as I am, but along with Bloc Party they were the first bands I got introduced to on my tentative journey into defining my musical taste, so the release of their sophomore album, Sam’s Town is kind exciting to me.

This promo is for the Killers Weekend on Channel 4 (which is going on right now in the UK), and after getting Sam’s Town yesterday the tune they’re whistling seems to be from the albums bookends, Enterlude and Exitlude.

(Thanks Lee for the video)

Ok, so maybe its a bit much to suggest jtv is being groomed for its own digital television station, but it would be cool, and like these BBC and Channel 4 signposts show there is an exciting world of multichanneling to be had, once people start buying set top boxes, and decent content arrives.

The first video is an extended promo for Film4 announcing that the channel will available for free, and the second video is a very funny and fairly random promo for the same thing featuring Judi Dench and Ewan McGregor.

Maybe there is some context I’m missing for the second video, or maybe its just meant to be that random/surreal kind of thing, either way, I likes.

Update: get some context after the jump courtesy of YouTube.

Another Update: it turns out these promos were directed by Kevin Spacey.

I’ve since added it to the original post, so short of a new one being made in the last few week see the entire collection here.

Extended three minute promo for the More4 digital channel. West Wing, The Daily Show and Curb Your Enthusiasm, sounds cool.

“Unconvential programming to confront, inspire and entertain.”

“Freethinking television for intelligent minds.”

Just think of the multichanneling possibilities for Australia…

Above is the ever growing collection of Channel 4’s current set of idents. The simple idea that flows through all these idents is the creation of “the 4”, be it optical illusion, supernatural intervention or coincidence, the iconic Channel 4 logo rears its head at some point during all these videos.

The basic premise leaves open many possibilities to play with, which perhaps also explains the longevity that these idents retain. New idents continue to be produced by Channel 4, and are added to the top of this post, with the most recent addition being: Airplane graveyard.

This remains simply one of the best set of idents I’ve seen. Any new idents will be added to this post as I find them.

For more Channel 4 awesomeness check out the Channel 4 category of this blog for lots more videos, or watch some of the special/one-off idents that Channel 4 have produced for various occasions below.

While its not entirely a Channel 4 ident as such, this promo for The Killers weekend on 4 does follow the same structure and is very cool….

In a week that I blogged Australia’s three commercial network and two public broadcaster news openers I thought I’d round it all out with these three commercial news openers from the UK.

I’ve already posted the BBC News openers, and while they remain my favourite I do like the Channel 4 set.

The UK and Australian opening sequences of Big Brother, is it just Australia, or do all Big Brother houses around the world get filled up with the same demographic of people? (Can’t think of a euphemism for “bogan“).

You learn something new everyday on Wikipedia, and in my attempt to bring you some sort of mildy informed commentary on Big Brother, I’ve come up with this…
