Good show, bad promo, wrong network.

Weeds is a brilliant show, and just like with Big Love you don’t have to be into polygamy (or in this case marijuana) to appreciate it.

Season three has just started in the US, but fans have probably already seen the first four episodes which were leaked pre TX with all but the blessing of the shows creator (don’t you love progressive television folk?).

Channel Nine have started spruiking the September/October return of season two with this promo. Now I don’t know if its just me, but the music choice/volume just seems totally incorrect even for my young ears. When I first saw it, I actually thought iTunes had started playing over it, thats how disconnected it seems from the footage.

Now, if you’re eagerly awaiting the shows return on Nine, firstly let me welcome you to the club of Weeds fans, but for the love of god, just download it, you know Nine is going to end up pissing you off somehow.

UPDATE: The ABC served over 5 million downloads last month!

Its been over a year since the ABC began their trial of video podcasting, and what started out with just two shows has now expanded to over a dozen of the national broadcasters news and entertainment programs.

And while the video is far from DVD or DivX quality, at 8-cents a day I’d say their doing a pretty good job. While the BBC has taken the iPlayer route allowing you to download a DRM protected version of videos that automatically deletes itself, I hope the ABC keep on with the podcasting, keep far away from DRM, improve the video quality and keep adding shows.

The ABC’s enormous archive would probably make for a pretty good for-pay download store, amd I’m sure the ABC are already looking at something like that. For now though, no other network in Australia comes close to the video download offerings of the ABC and I look forward to seeing what they do next.

Top Gear is back! A special race episode from Canada to the North Pole goes to air in the UK on Wednesday night. And while its probably going to take a lot to top the insanity of the American road trip episode I can’t wait to see what they get up to racing each other to the top of the world.

In other Top Gear news, another American version has been scrapped for now.

– Thanks for the video Graham.

The Great Global Warming Swindle, a controversial documentary that disputes the popular belief over climate change is being aired on the ABC tonight, as well as being simulcast on ABC2 and NewsRadio.

For whatever reason the ABC is playing this documentary, at least they aren’t presenting it in isolation. It will be introduced by Lateline presenter Tony Jones, followed by interview by Jones with the films director, Martin Durkin and then a panel discussion.

I’m looking forward to the Tony Jones interview, which will hopefully question Durkin’s own motives throughly enough to compensate for the film being played in the first place.

Jennifer Byrne talking porn with Richard E Grant and the gang from The First Tuesday Book Club. I’m all for the analysis of popular culture, and mainstream texts, I guess I just thought television would be ahead in line to pornography.

This is the kind of Chaser stuff I love, and while I doubt we’ll be seeing this show on the ABC anytime soon, I think any accessible critical discussion about media or culture, be it literature, television or porn, is a good thing.

Download the whole episode from the official vodcast or just get it off me.

The HBO drama Big Love starts on SBS tonight at 8:30pm, and while its up against Life on Mars and Grey’s Anatomy among other things, it will be interesting to see how it goes. Like the Chaser, it may bring a new audience who would otherwise not be watching television, as opposed to eating away at another networks viewers. As you’ve probably already heard in the promos above, or seen in the print ads that appeared in today’s papers the show stars Bill Paxton as a practicing polygamist living in Salt Lake City.

SBS is really growing on me of late, and I’ve already gotten over the fact they have in-program advertising. The Indonesian News was never going to be a draw card for me on SBS, but programming like Top Gear, the new News, and now potentially Big Love, the Special Broadcasting Service is becoming a bit of a More4, and hopefully a good environment to foster alternative programming that isn’t getting shown elsewhere.

Big Brother launches its eighth season today in the UK. Broadcast on Channel 4 and E4, the show suffered some worse publicity than usual earlier this year with accusations of racism and bullying saw the shows major sponsor, The Carphone Warehouse drop out of the latest season, only to be replaced by Virgin Media.

The redesigned logo in the above promos have been described as a “centrifugal inter-locking RGB rainbow test card”.. which will apparently make sense at some point during the show.

Somersault on SBS tonight at 9:30pm

Tonight on SBS at 9:30pm is a film called Sommersault. Released in 2004, and directed by Cate Shortland, the film stars Abbie Cornish and Sam Worthington.

The story starts in the “unreality” of Canberra, where a 15 year old incredibly naive Heidi makes a pass at her mothers boyfriend, only for her to walk in on it. Heidi flees Canberra for the snow town of Jindabyne, where she meets Joe…

I realise thats probably the worst summary of a movie in history, but I’m really more a TV guy. That said, its a beautiful film, with its soundtrack by Decoder Ring, so if your not doing anything else tonight, give this Australian made, official selection for the Cannes Film Festival movie a chance.

If you live in the UK, your lucky enough to be waking up to BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend, the largest free ticketed event in Europe, and if your waking up in Preston, you’re even luckier because your probably going to it.

Featuring a huge line up of acts including but not limited to; Bloc Party, Maximo Park, Razorlight (the first video features this song), Scissor Sisters (second video) and Kaiser Chiefs, the closest free event we would have to this in Australia would be Triple J’s One Night Stand.

Almost as impressive as the acts themselves though is the BBC’s coverage of the event, which spans not only Radio 1, but also nightly highlights on BBC Three and live coverage of the whole thing on the red button’s BBCi. The UK really seems to have embraced the promise of digital television, hopefully Australia will too.. eventually.

And, seeing as its a radio event, here’s some audio…

This is really pretty smart. Life on Mars, a show about a modern day policeman who gets hit by a car and wakes up in the year 1973 being promoted as if the show was being broadcast on the BBC of the 1970’s.

Its really well done, and the theme continues on their other marketing exercises. Graham snapped the below photo from a bus shelter in London promoting the series return. Keep reading for the photo….
