Channel Five just launched two new digital only channels, FiveUS is as you could probably guess for American programming and will include the likes of the CSI’s and some American sports.

The music in the first video is appropriately enough “Chicago” by Sufjan Stevens, which is an awesome awesome song in its own right.

The third video is the first three minutes of Five US introducing the new channel, and also features the song “America” by Razorlight.

Update: John Suchet reminding you to rescan for the new channels.

Apparently the ABC is registering something like 1.6 million podcast downloads a month, the compares to the 3.5 million the BBC does, and considering the enormous difference in reach of the two broadcasters you’d have to say that is pretty impressive.

No doubt adding to an increase in that number is the new shows being added to the ABC burgeoning vodcasting venture. What started as just The Chaser’s War on Everything and JTV, has since grown to include Lateline, Lateline Business, Dig TV, and as of this week Media Watch and the new ABC2 show Good Game.

What’s next for the ABC though? At the Movies, Four Corners, News, Enough Rope, or hopefully all of the above.

“On November 5 1956, the ABC made its first TV broadcast from its Sydney studios, inaugurated by Prime Minister Robert Menzies, and on November 19 the first TV broadcast beamed out from the ABC’s Melbourne’s studios.”

– From History of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation

These promos featuring John Clarke take a look at next months line up of nostalgic and not so nostalgic programming including the new West Wing and the Queen’s Sister.

The night before BBC One switched over to the new idents they played this montage of the “symbols which have defined BBC One for the last four and half years”. It features 14 of the idents from the Rhythm and Movement series.

I can’t imagine any network in Australia ever farewelling an on screen package like this, but it was very well done.

ABC3, e7, TenTwo and bSBS; Just some of the reasons people will eventually switch to digital.

SBS has animated the benefits of it, the ABC gave it a shot too, and Penelope Keith has hawked it to the British public, but I think the Digit Al series (part one here) featuring the voice of Matt Lucas has been the best concieved of the ideas in trying to get people to switch to digital television.

But even the best concieved of ideas isn’t going to get people converting if there isn’t anything to watch, sadly thats a problem that Australia and not the UK has to face.

This new Channel 4 ident doesn’t quite follow the same formula as most of the others in the series, but makes creative use of the “4”.

The Killers very own Channel 4 ident

Forgive me if you’re not as into The Killers as I am, but along with Bloc Party they were the first bands I got introduced to on my tentative journey into defining my musical taste, so the release of their sophomore album, Sam’s Town is kind exciting to me.

This promo is for the Killers Weekend on Channel 4 (which is going on right now in the UK), and after getting Sam’s Town yesterday the tune they’re whistling seems to be from the albums bookends, Enterlude and Exitlude.

(Thanks Lee for the video)

The new BBC idents have been unveiled, for more info about the concept read the press release, but for now until they launch on screen in October these 4:3 versions from the promo reel will have to do.

I really liked the old dancer idents, and I’m not sure I’m quite as excited about these. I think Channel 4 has officially won me over.
