Everybody talks about a new world in the morning

(2.3mb progressive)

Crikey has already weighed in on the soon to launch one hour SBS World News, and while I’m not a fan of more ad breaks (although it further justifies keeping the ABC ad free if nothing else), I have to congratulate SBS on introducing someone too young to have ever heard of Roger Whittaker to his ‘New World in the Morning’.

The relaunch of Sunrise (later this month)

> Quicktime H.264
(25.5mb)
> iPod Compatible
(10.5mb)
> Watch in Flash
(8.4mb progressive)

Sunrise may be at the top of it game, but thats not going to stop them from keeping fresh and hopefully winning over what viewers remain from the fallen star that is Nine’s Today Show.

Besides a visual refresh (sets and graphics) a few new segments are being introduced, including one aimed right at the epitome of The Today Show’s stuffiness… Alan Jones;

The Other Editorial will be a daily shot at Alan Jones’ gig on Today featuring comedians such as Jonesy and Amanda, Peter Berner, Fifi Box, Paul Murray and The Sandman “covering everything from social etiquette to celebrity appraisal.”

So look out for that later this month & the new weather person (figured it out yet?).

Above is video of this mornings opener, and for contrast what it looked like nearly a year ago.

ABC1 idents have always been a little hit and miss. This latest release though, which started to appear at the beginning of the month have been the most polished, coherent and unified I have seen from the national broadcaster since I started this site.

I hope they build on this foundation, not make hundreds and just play the good ones, I’d rather get sick of seeing something good too many times, then seeing a thousand shades of mediocre.

For the first time they have started to feel like a real set of idents, I look forward to seeing what they add to these. (There’s more to.. Podcasting?)

Apple announced the iPhone early yesterday morning Australian time, and like every other Mac toting 21-year-old I obviously want one. The only problem is it won’t be released here until 2008.

That didn’t stop SBS, Seven, Ten and Nine all covering the story in their evening bulletins (what, too good to plug an unreleased product ABC?). I’m unashamedly an Apple fan (heck I own shares), but I just can’t think of another company that makes this big of a positive splash (see videos) a year out from release.

Playing with Flash: Is RealPlayer dead?

Last year 15% of the downloads from this site were RealPlayer (about 70% were Quicktime), and so far this year Real has accounted for less then 4%. With almost everyone having Flash installed I thought I’d test out the format for myself.

I’ve replaced the RealPlayer format with flash on all posts so far this year, I’ve supplied the code if you want to embed it somewhere else. I’d love to hear if it works for you and what you think.

The ABC in 2007, sunbaking and iPodding.

> Quicktime H.264
(35.4mb)
> iPod Compatible
(21.7mb)
> Watch in Flash
(10mb progressive)

The ABC is touting its 2007 home grown offerings in this two minute promo interestingly bookended by a recreation of one of Australia’s most famous photos; Max Dupain’s Sunbaker.

What have you got to look forward to though? Bastard Boys, The Bridge, Curtin, Choir of Hard Knocks, Summer Heights High, 900 Neighbours and Crude.

2007 will also apparently be the year of “reaching out, sharing and being accessible” according to the promo in the same shot as a video iPod so hopefully that means more downloadable content to come.

Update: The ABC’s monthly newsletter notes that “in 2007 the ABC will be vodcasting 20 to 25 programs each week”, awesome! (Thanks AndyOZ).

Jesus Christ, help us all Lord.

Last night on Channel 7 an interesting audio screw up occurred which resulted in in the line “Jesus Christ, help us all Lord” being repeated over and over again during the documentary ‘Mayday’.

Initially it was thought the audio was from within the doco and someone looped, however it since came out that the audio is actually from footage of an convoy in Iraq thats been on YouTube since September. Footage of the audio screw up and the footage from Iraq is after the jump.

These hopefully unscripted (or badly scripted to seem natural) chats with friends about everyones favorite public broadcaster look like the result of a focus group that found “young males” and “baby boomer females” were the audience most needing appealing to.

The 1st two videos are some builders talking about how good Myf Warhurst looked hosting Australia’s Favourite Album (and in general might I add), and in the 2nd video the quality of the news. The 3rd video has some women sitting around a living room talking about drinking G&T’s during the seven o’clock news, with the 4th video having them discuss the quality of the programming and lack of ads.

It’s hardly subtle stuff, but if it works it works, anything to get people thinking about the ABC is good enough for me.
