Everybody talks about a new world in the morning

Crikey has already weighed in on the soon to launch one hour SBS World News, and while I’m not a fan of more ad breaks (although it further justifies keeping the ABC ad free if nothing else), I have to congratulate SBS on introducing someone too young to have ever heard of Roger Whittaker to his ‘New World in the Morning’.

The ABC in 2007, sunbaking and iPodding.

> Quicktime H.264
(35.4mb)
> iPod Compatible
(21.7mb)
> Watch in Flash
(10mb progressive)

The ABC is touting its 2007 home grown offerings in this two minute promo interestingly bookended by a recreation of one of Australia’s most famous photos; Max Dupain’s Sunbaker.

What have you got to look forward to though? Bastard Boys, The Bridge, Curtin, Choir of Hard Knocks, Summer Heights High, 900 Neighbours and Crude.

2007 will also apparently be the year of “reaching out, sharing and being accessible” according to the promo in the same shot as a video iPod so hopefully that means more downloadable content to come.

Update: The ABC’s monthly newsletter notes that “in 2007 the ABC will be vodcasting 20 to 25 programs each week”, awesome! (Thanks AndyOZ).

Zat You, Santa Claus?

I hate non ratings periods, they don’t make sense, if I didn’t download all my television I’d probably appreciate the fact that Nip/Tuck was finally returning to Australian television, but apart from that it doesn’t make sense, its not like we stop watching television!

Anyway, the point I wanted to make was that I love the British tradition of Christmas specials, I first realised it happened when I got into The Office. Its almost like a present from the BBC to enjoy over the break, I can even picture families watching television together.. and all that crap.

This promo from BBC One is a big coming soon to all this years Christmas specials including Little Britain Abroad, The Vicar of Dibley, My Family and The Green Green Grass.

The music is ‘Zat You, Santa Claus?’ by Louis Armstrong.

If only the biggest problem Australia had with its digital conversion was reminding people to rescan so they could get another two channels.

This neat promo for FiveLife and FiveUS has John Suchet reminding everyone to rescan for the new Five channels now available on digital.

-Thanks Craig for the video

The BBC launched a new corporate campaign in March this year with tagline ‘This is what we do’. Each video is designed to demonstrate “the passion and commitment of individuals working for the organisation”.

This is the first campaign of its kind since the 1997 Perfect Day promotion which I’ve been told was quite revered when it was first released.

I don’t think this is all of them, and I’m not sure if they are still running, let me know.

Update: Two more, ‘Every minute’ and ‘The Favours’. Thanks Graham.

The second part of the BBC documentary series Planet Earth goes to air later today (UK time) and since I’ve already shown you the earlier BBC and ABC promos for the show it seems only fair you see the new promo (still featuring “Hoppípolla” by Sigur Rós) from the recently refreshed BBC One.

“On November 5 1956, the ABC made its first TV broadcast from its Sydney studios, inaugurated by Prime Minister Robert Menzies, and on November 19 the first TV broadcast beamed out from the ABC’s Melbourne’s studios.”

– From History of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation

These promos featuring John Clarke take a look at next months line up of nostalgic and not so nostalgic programming including the new West Wing and the Queen’s Sister.

SBS has animated the benefits of it, the ABC gave it a shot too, and Penelope Keith has hawked it to the British public, but I think the Digit Al series (part one here) featuring the voice of Matt Lucas has been the best concieved of the ideas in trying to get people to switch to digital television.

But even the best concieved of ideas isn’t going to get people converting if there isn’t anything to watch, sadly thats a problem that Australia and not the UK has to face.
