BBC News relaunched its on screen look in January across all their news services, including the News, News 24 and BBC World for those of us living outside the UK. For some of the reasons behind the change the head of news at BBC World blogged about it here.

For some comparision, video of BBC News from May 2006 can be found here.

Sunrise relaunched its look yesterday, the above videos introduce the new set; take you on a tour of their new home; and talk about the new graphics along with showing off the new weather respectively.

Sunrise has never been about news for me, and Seven probably planned it that way, I still find the subtle humour and drama of the “cast” the most interesting part of the show. It reminds me of Aaron Sorkin’s Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, and while the behind the scenes probably aren’t quite as dramatic I’d like to think it would make for just as interesting a show.

A new world Monday evening

> Quicktime/iPod version (1.2mb)

I’m in Hong Kong waiting for my connecting flight to Paris and moderating comments… when my new best friend “SBS dude” commented this video from the relaunch of SBS news, which starts Monday.

Also, Sam from zspace, the folks behind the new ABC1 idents also commented here. Thanks everyone!

The relaunch of Sunrise (later this month)

Sunrise may be at the top of it game, but thats not going to stop them from keeping fresh and hopefully winning over what viewers remain from the fallen star that is Nine’s Today Show.

Besides a visual refresh (sets and graphics) a few new segments are being introduced, including one aimed right at the epitome of The Today Show’s stuffiness… Alan Jones;

The Other Editorial will be a daily shot at Alan Jones’ gig on Today featuring comedians such as Jonesy and Amanda, Peter Berner, Fifi Box, Paul Murray and The Sandman “covering everything from social etiquette to celebrity appraisal.”

So look out for that later this month & the new weather person (figured it out yet?).

Above is video of this mornings opener, and for contrast what it looked like nearly a year ago.

The ghost and Mrs Murdoch.

Sarah Murdoch (née O’Hare) has been filling in for Jessica Rowe while she’s on maternity leave from the Today show, this clip is pretty much the extent of what I’ve watched of it though.

If the Today show does ever improve it will be the greatest second act in breakfast television history. The news department is a reflection of the entire network, its literally the on-air face and voice of the people who work there, and if you don’t like it, I don’t see how you can have a positive opinion of the rest of the channel.

Kath and Kim gets Silverman’d

> Quicktime H.264

You’ve probably heard by now that Kath and Kim is being developed for America by Ben Silverman. It’s easy to poo-poo such a concept, but Ben Silverman is the man that brought us the awesomly funny American version of The Office, so before I make the obvious “how will it translate” remarks I’m going to just wait and see how it goes, it could work, it could be great, or it could flop.

So if its from Ben Silverman, and is going to be on NBC, will that mean Channel Ten will get it here?

(Also, does the American Office rate well in the UK?)

Myf Warhurst hosted last nights My Favourite Album on ABC. The third such special, which has so far included Jennifer Byrne with My Favourite Book and Margaret Pomeranz with My Favourite Film.

These list shows are very simple concepts (E! does about 40 of them a week), the ABC has done an awesome job with them, and as with the first two, I really enjoyed last nights.

The second video is Andrew Hansen doing his “Crazy Warehouse Guy” homage to Radiohead’s OK, Computer album, which is Australia’s 3rd favourite album, see the full list here.

I look forward to next years; My Favourite… TV Show, Blog, Sonnet, Magazine?

The opening sequence of BBC Breakfast (on the same set as Newsnight?) and Sky Sunrise, some of what Britain wakes up to in the morning. These clips are a few months old so you’ll have to tell me if things have changed in the world of UK morning television.

I’m not sure if the UK has the same “judge a person by what breakfast television they watch” (or don’t watch) that we seem to have in Australia, but it would be interesting to hear whats the most popular in the UK.

Check out the Today show and Australian Sunrise openers as well.

Jana Wendt’s final seeya on today’s Sunday program. The show is being retooled and the new “chattier”, Weekend Sunrise’d version will be hosted by Ellen Fanning and Ross Greenwood (neither of whom I recall ever being that interesting).

So, has Eddie done anything to help the image of Nine since becoming boss?
