I’m a BBC runner-up! My web 2.0 design came 11th.

bbc2.0

The BBC ran a competition in April/May of this year called Reboot asking for submissions to redesign bbc.co.uk for the new web 2.0 world. I submitted a design on the last day of the competition, and quickly forgot about it… Until yesterday when I got an email informing me that I was one of the ten runners-up!

I’m pretty sure they weren’t too jazzed with my design (heck, I wasn’t), but they did seem to like some of my ideas, the judges said about my submission:

It was the 2 fascinating “social media” ideas here that swung it. The promos for Project: Planet Earth (“six billion volunteers required”). Eat that myspace! And the idea of a collaborative wiki based EastEnders script also stood out.

I’ve been told I win an iPod nano, which is cool, but I’m just excited that my ideas got recognised, it feels good! See my design in all its grainy-jpeg glory here, and of course check out the actual winning design here.

Well, that wasn’t too shabby was it? A night of Planet Earth and Bleak House. Outside of the actual content of the shows I found it interesting to see a watermark on the ABC’s HD channel.

Admittedly I don’t flick onto the high definition stream too often but last time I did I remember there being no watermarks at all. The “HD” is probably a little big but apart from that I don’t mind the ABC branding this burgeoning television experience.

(I don’t think my computer was quite up for recording both the HD and SD streams of the ABC simultaneously so forgive me if the video jumps a bit).

The Chaser looks at some of ACA and TT’s better renactments, including a man having a stroke, a boss firing an employee and some very realistic fighting.

Along with James Thomas from A Current Affair and his efforts in producing five entire reports about the Urban/Kidman wedding with no actual facts.

Sorry I’m late everyone, my heater broke and my pussy was frozen solid. And by that I mean my vagina.

Hilarious skit from the Chaser parodying the humor employed by Are You Being Served?, in their own creation, Are You Being Shagged?

The Chaser’s take on the ABC, Alan Jones’ biography and a lot of him swearing.

As I’m sure most of you know by now ABC Books, the publishing arm of the national broadcaster has decided not to publish a book it commissioned about conservative radio personality Alan Jones. The book has been deemed “legally defensible” from defamation, nonetheless the ABC won’t be publishing it, for what they call “commercial reasons”, but what everyone else see’s as pressure from the government appointed board.

I know there will be people who’ll defend the way Jones’ behaves in the video bloopers, of course they are selective, but it says a lot about a persons character, its not like there are tapes of Ramona Koval swearing her head off and yelling at her staff.

For more on the whole issue visit the Crikey media section or read the Media Watch transcript.

The opening of Canberra’s other full length local news, Win. I don’t know enough about the technical side of things, but they must be filming it with handycams because the quality is just horrible.

Planet Earth loves Sigur Rós, now so does the ABC.

While the first set of ABC promos for Planet Earth that aired last month featured the composition Jupiter by Gustav Holst (thanks Alan), the new one which I saw for the first time tonight has gone the way of the BBC and is now also using Hoppípolla by Sigur Rós.

I guess these promo making types must talk amongst themselves.
