Sky One, Two and Three launched a revamped look in the UK last month. All three networks now share the same set of idents, with just the colours and giant animated numbers setting them apart.

Each network is also embracing a “theme” in their design; solids, liquids and particles, with Sky Three taking on the latter. The new branding is a shift in the right direction, away from the old entirely CGI approach.

Have a look at the solids of Sky One, and the liquid Sky Two variations as well.

– Big thanks to Andrew for sharing.

I like to consider the old BBC One idents as the reason I started this site. And while this new set that launched in 2006 doesn’t grab me in the same way, they’re still some of the best television branding going around.

These three new additions stay true to the formula, with the spectacular ‘Helicopter’ spot being introduced on new years day this year, and the other two going to air for the first time just days ago in late August.

Check out the rest of the current set of BBC One idents here.

– Thanks to the combined efforts of Andy and Andrew for the videos.

The Hits, a music channel in the UK relaunched itself this month as 4Music. The newly rebranded station joins the fold of sibling networks Channel 4, E4, More4 and Film4 in a multichannel line up that you could only dream of in Australia.

These two videos are promoting the relaunch which occurred on August 15th, with the first video a slow motion spot set to the track “Kiss with a Fist” by Florence and the Machine that’s refreshingly decent for a music channel.

– Cheers to Craig for the videos.

Television 101: An introduction to idents.

David Mitchell, from That Mitchell and Webb Look recently narrated a Channel 4 series called TV is Dead? all about the “challenges the television industry is currently facing as a result of the digital revolution”.

One part of the series looked at the often over looked importance of television idents, something Australian television loves to dismiss, and something that this site is all about promoting. The clip should serve as an interesting introduction to the world of idents, and also offers a great peek into the UK television industry.

– Enormous thanks to Andy for the video.

An incredibly simple use of aerial footage, combined with the familiar beats of music that screams “you’re watching a news channel” create a surprisingly effective collection of idents for Al Jazeera English.

They express the kind of simple dignity that an international news channel broadcasting to over 100 million people should command, as opposed to say this.

– Big thanks to Sean for the videos.

Discovery HD rounds out the new HD channels from the recently launched Foxtel HD, it joins National Geographic HD, BBC HD, and Fox Sports and ESPN HD.

The network is yet to adopt the new look Discovery branding, which is a shame because although this is an HD channel it looks like it just stepped out the nineties.

The history of Australian television, by Foxtel.

Since my constant shilling for all things Foxtel HD apparently knows no bounds, I figure the least I could do is post the advert for the new high definition service too.

The commercial is a trip through Australian television history, from the first transmission in 1956, to the introduction of colour in 1975, right up to the launch of Foxtel HD, which I’m afraid probably won’t go down in history with the kind of reverence that they were probably hoping for, but it is an ad after all.

The song featured in the video is ‘Lost in Time’ by Melbourne artist Whitley.

– Big thanks to Christian for the video.

As the Foxtel HD roadshow continues, we’ve already seen BBC HD, and the sports channels, now its onto National Geographic HD who have launched a simple yet dramatic series of idents to celebrate their jump into the world of high definition.
