Update 08/04/07: Sunroof ident added.

BBC Two, the channel that delights me on a weekly basis with new episodes of Top Gear (promo below) relaunched its on screen look over the weekend, and I feel a little conflicted.

Maybe as an outside observer I can’t gauge how sick people may have been of the old look idents, but I still really liked them. They were easily the best entirely computer generated idents out there, and used a formula with seemingly (or I guess not) endless variations.

My favourite of the newbies is probably the zoetrope (first video), they could have even expanded that into a whole series with different projections being made. For now though, try and let the new teal coloured logo grow on you as you soak up the new look.

Along with the Benelux countries, Scandinavia is high on my list of groupings-of-three-nations I really want to visit (Sweden for the Saabs, Belgium for Antwerp).

Thanks to Hans I’m happy to be able to show off some of Norway’s idents from the countries largest commercial broadcaster TV2. In my research for something interesting to say about Norway I discovered that the country is rated #1 in the UN Human Development Index which isn’t too shabby at all (Australia is #3).

(It looks like BBC Two will be relaunching their idents, I’ll post whatever I can get my hands on soon.)

The BBC has not wavered from their 70’s theme when its comes to the promotion of the I’ve-heard-its-quite-good Life on Mars which started its second and final season last night in the UK.

While the beeb recently relaunched its BBC One idents, they took the ingenious step of having you “tune in” to the BBC of the 1970’s, idents and all, for their broadcast of last nights episode. Check out some of the other promos for Life on Mars here.

I may be back in Australia, but thanks to a very helpful French reader of this blog called Jean-François, I’m happy to be able to show off some of the French television I didn’t get time to record during my weeks stay in one of my new favourite countries. These clips are from ARTE, or Association Relative à la Télévision Européenne.

The first video is “a promo for an evening schedule + one promo + ident + explanation for “bicanal” (viewers can chose to listen to the program either in french or in the original language)” while the second video is “the channel opening at 2 pm with a promo for what is coming next and an ident”. More French television to come!

ABC1 idents have always been a little hit and miss. This latest release though, which started to appear at the beginning of the month have been the most polished, coherent and unified I have seen from the national broadcaster since I started this site.

I hope they build on this foundation, not make hundreds and just play the good ones, I’d rather get sick of seeing something good too many times, then seeing a thousand shades of mediocre.

For the first time they have started to feel like a real set of idents, I look forward to seeing what they add to these. (There’s more to.. Podcasting?)

These hopefully unscripted (or badly scripted to seem natural) chats with friends about everyones favorite public broadcaster look like the result of a focus group that found “young males” and “baby boomer females” were the audience most needing appealing to.

The 1st two videos are some builders talking about how good Myf Warhurst looked hosting Australia’s Favourite Album (and in general might I add), and in the 2nd video the quality of the news. The 3rd video has some women sitting around a living room talking about drinking G&T’s during the seven o’clock news, with the 4th video having them discuss the quality of the programming and lack of ads.

It’s hardly subtle stuff, but if it works it works, anything to get people thinking about the ABC is good enough for me.
