The new ABC1 ident: News.

> Quicktime H.264

(1.5mb progressive)

The talented folks at zspace have released another new ABC1 ident on the world, this time promoting the online, television and radio news services of everyones favourite national broadcaster.

The ident has hard to describe but strangely cool music (better then the usual ad jingle) and features the new look abc.net.au/news which still hasn’t officially launched yet.

Check out the rest of the awesome new ABC1 idents here.

Will abc.net.au get ads?

abc.net.au with ads

The Managing Director of the ABC unvieled a new plan for the national broadcasters digital future yesterday. While I look forward to more video content online and expanded podcasting (apparently the ABC is the “largest creator of podcasting material in the world “) I’m less enthusiastic at the idea of the ABC carrying ads online.

I know there is the obvious argument that it will bring in revenue with very little effort, but I just believe that we are so fortunate to have a commercial-free national broadcaster. To quote Crikey the ABC needs to remain a “non-commercial public meeting space – a town square rather than a shopping mall”, its something other countries aren’t lucky enough to have and I think we should protect it.

Is this the new abc.net.au/news?

the new abc.net.au/news?

The ABC has been talking about relaunching their news site for a while now, and if the above screenshot I recently received in my email is to be believed you could be looking at a draft of the national broadcasters new news frontpage.

Only time will tell I guess.. click the screenshot for a better look.

The adventures of Augie March.

> Download in Quicktime H264 (40.5mb) or iPod Compatible (10.5mb)

Never has a song I voted for in Triple J’s hottest 100 come in at number one. The highest was number four. So you can imagine my excitement when Friday morning last week, listening to a stream of the countdown from Paris I heard that the phenomenal One Crowded Hour by Augie March took out the top position in the most voted public song poll in the world. Enjoy!

ABC1 idents have always been a little hit and miss. This latest release though, which started to appear at the beginning of the month have been the most polished, coherent and unified I have seen from the national broadcaster since I started this site.

I hope they build on this foundation, not make hundreds and just play the good ones, I’d rather get sick of seeing something good too many times, then seeing a thousand shades of mediocre.

For the first time they have started to feel like a real set of idents, I look forward to seeing what they add to these. (There’s more to.. Podcasting?)

The ABC in 2007, sunbaking and iPodding.

> Quicktime H.264
(35.4mb)

> Watch in Flash
(10mb progressive)

The ABC is touting its 2007 home grown offerings in this two minute promo interestingly bookended by a recreation of one of Australia’s most famous photos; Max Dupain’s Sunbaker.

What have you got to look forward to though? Bastard Boys, The Bridge, Curtin, Choir of Hard Knocks, Summer Heights High, 900 Neighbours and Crude.

2007 will also apparently be the year of “reaching out, sharing and being accessible” according to the promo in the same shot as a video iPod so hopefully that means more downloadable content to come.

Update: The ABC’s monthly newsletter notes that “in 2007 the ABC will be vodcasting 20 to 25 programs each week”, awesome! (Thanks AndyOZ).

These hopefully unscripted (or badly scripted to seem natural) chats with friends about everyones favorite public broadcaster look like the result of a focus group that found “young males” and “baby boomer females” were the audience most needing appealing to.

The 1st two videos are some builders talking about how good Myf Warhurst looked hosting Australia’s Favourite Album (and in general might I add), and in the 2nd video the quality of the news. The 3rd video has some women sitting around a living room talking about drinking G&T’s during the seven o’clock news, with the 4th video having them discuss the quality of the programming and lack of ads.

It’s hardly subtle stuff, but if it works it works, anything to get people thinking about the ABC is good enough for me.

The ABC gets festive (if not entirely creative)

If its possible, I think I’ve romanticised dial-up internet. I’m sitting in my old bedroom on my Dad’s farm outside of Canberra, its Christmas eve, and the innocence (or what was left of it) of my youth is flooding back to me… I’m so glad Christmas is only once a year.

Check out what the ABC did last Christmas with their idents here.
