Its been nearly a year since I last compared the three commercial news opening sequences, and while not much has changed for Seven or Ten (except the Rowe thing), Nine have been tinkering away.

These were all captured last night, so they all compare the same stories, and they are all dominated by the backdown of the Prime Minister over the sale of the Snowy Hydro.

You’re watching Newsnight, are you trying to impress someone?

After the passionate response I got to the new BBC 6 and 10 o’clock news I thought the next logical step would be Newsnight.

I’ve never actually seen the show, but I have seen it parodied on Dead Ringers (second video). Am I right in saying the Australian equivalent would be Lateline?

The combination of round desk and couch looks interesting, and the huge screen at the back seems more versatile then the usual plasma or graphics that accompanies most news presenters.

Love My Opening Sequence

I just spent the last two days watching the entire first season of the Foxtel drama Love My Way, and damn it was good. It’s been so long since I got into an Australian drama, it was almost a novelty to see Australian culture reflected in a scripted show, I’m so used to my Six Feet Unders and the like.

It was refreshing that the show wasn’t based around a profession (doctors, cops, ranch hands or whatever it is the McLeod’s Daughters are). The characters are pretty fucked up, but none of it seemed contrived, the situations and storylines grow organically.

I don’t want to spoil the plot if you haven’t seen it, but episode eight was pretty hard to watch, its very emotional, and while the plot turn that occurs may seem like a way to wrap up the season or just generate some drama, its dealt with in such a blunt and raw way it actually works.

Its only 10 episodes so if you have a spare 500 minutes I really suggest you watch it, it will reignite your faith in Australian television.

I read somewhere that the commercial stations wanted to air it, but Claudia Karvan and co said no so unless you have Foxtel, the DVD’s may be your only option.

The opening for last nights BBC News at 6pm and 10pm. The sets are excellent, and much better than anything we have in Australia.

There’s more to.. the Rose d’Or

wecan

The Rose d’Or from what I’ve read is a kind of “Oscars of Television” and the awards have been given out in Lucerne, Switzerland since 1961. An Australian has never won a golden rose until now.

And not to be out done two prizes were won by Australian’s, and both from the ABC.

Chris Lilley won for best Male Comedy Performance for The Nominees (aka We Can Be Heroes) and the documentary Girl in a Mirror about photographer Carol Jerrems by Kathy Drayton and Helen Bowden won the Arts and Specials Award.

I heard Chris Lilley on the radio today, and like me he hadn’t heard of the award (he didn’t go to Lucerne for the ceremony) although he said that the gravity of the award and the past winners has started to sink in. He also said he’s in pre-production for a new show that he couldn’t talk about for the ABC and did mention that he hopes to do a second season of We Can be Heroes at some point.

The first video is the current opener for Andrew Denton’s Enough Rope, the second video was captured in July last year, I’m not exactly sure how many times they’ve changed it, but I feel its more then just these two.

But before I go.

I’m sure you’ve already seen this on YouTube, but now that its been used as the actual opener for this weeks new episode of the Simpsons (the Ricky Gervais episode), I thought I’d share it again in this context.

They cleaned it up for use in the episode by adding the ‘created by’ credits etc. I don’t think Sky could of could have imagined how well this would go.

Her? The show that engulfed my life.

It all started in 2004, I was half way through a book about Freud, and having convinced myself I was in “arrested development” I decided to forego seeing a therapist, and in instead I searched it on Wikipedia…

What I found was an article about a television show, and after downloading the first few episodes I was hooked. The show is so self-referencing its insane, and for a family that has been criticised as being cold and unlikeable, I’ve fallen so far in love with the Bluths and made such a connection with them, it makes my family feel like strangers.

Some people have Star Wars, some have Harry Potter, I have Arrested Development, and its the greatest thing to ever happen to me.

The updated warnings from Network Ten, I haven’t seen the Seven ones, but both Ten and Nine now use the new classification logos. Are they being told to?

ABC hasn’t adopted the new symbols, but they still easily do it the best for me.

The animation on these is very cool, its simple, but I think they are the best of the five channels.
