One last dance for BBC One.

The night before BBC One switched over to the new idents they played this montage of the “symbols which have defined BBC One for the last four and half years”. It features 14 of the idents from the Rhythm and Movement series.

I can’t imagine any network in Australia ever farewelling an on screen package like this, but it was very well done.

The new BBC idents have been unveiled, for more info about the concept read the press release, but for now until they launch on screen in October these 4:3 versions from the promo reel will have to do.

I really liked the old dancer idents, and I’m not sure I’m quite as excited about these. I think Channel 4 has officially won me over.

Radio 3 is to ABC Classic FM as Radio 2 is to…?

BBC Radio 2 is apparently the UK’s most popular radio station. If anyone knows about the original footage of this promo or how it was put together I’d be interested to hear, because the concept for it could have been such a failure if it wasn’t executed properly, but it seems to work pretty well.

Also, whats the British or American equivalent of Triple J? Radio 6? KCRW?

Richard Hammond out of intensive care

According to the BBC Richard Hammond is out of intensive care and is making “satisfactory progress”. He’s suffered signficant brain injury (which I can only hope is different to brain damage). The above video is from last nights BBC Ten O’Clock news about the accident.

The opening sequence of BBC Breakfast (on the same set as Newsnight?) and Sky Sunrise, some of what Britain wakes up to in the morning. These clips are a few months old so you’ll have to tell me if things have changed in the world of UK morning television.

I’m not sure if the UK has the same “judge a person by what breakfast television they watch” (or don’t watch) that we seem to have in Australia, but it would be interesting to hear whats the most popular in the UK.

Check out the Today show and Australian Sunrise openers as well.

Ok, so maybe its a bit much to suggest jtv is being groomed for its own digital television station, but it would be cool, and like these BBC and Channel 4 signposts show there is an exciting world of multichanneling to be had, once people start buying set top boxes, and decent content arrives.

The BBC started running brand promos back in March, they’re created by Fallon I believe. The first video here is about their golf coverage, and the second is about Radio 1.

The earlier ones I think are better, check out the Liberation of Kabul, Ricky Gervais and Iraqi Cameraman.

It wasn’t too long ago that I showed you an ad from Digital UK introducing their mascot ‘Digit Al’ to spruik the benefits of digital television and get the minority of British households who hadn’t already jumped on the digital bandwagon to do so.

Well the BBC are at it again with their own promo, featuring some British celebrities that I can’t quite recognise talking about the benefits of switching.

How I wish the Australian digital television market hadn’t been legislatevly retarted by “the dead hands of a compliant government and too powerful media owners”, Crikey have some other good points in an article about the situation, which basically concludes that by pushing any real change back to 2012 is far too late, by which time we’ll all be downloading our shows (as if we’re not already), and commercial FTA will be screwed.

Australian’s love non-Australian content, there is nothing prolific to speak of being produced locally on commercial free to air, and with broadband not far from being in every persons house its no wonder we’re cutting out the middle man (the broadcaster), and finally taking control of when, how and what we watch on television.
