The Nine Network and BBC coverage of the Commonwealth Games. I think I like the BBC music better.

Triple J listeners get three hours of Zan Rowe every morning, but in the UK they get two hours of some guy called Zane Lowe.. this is a very cool promo for his BBC Radio 1 show.

The song is Crazy by Gnarls Barkley.

The BBC sure knows how to throw a party, I love these Christmas idents. The BBC One ident may be full of cliches wrapped in Christmas kitsch but its brilliantly executed with great production and I think it works really well.

The BBC Two ident uses a similiar technique to that of the ABC’s ‘Exercise your imagination’ promos. It takes the traditional BBC Two formula to very cool extreme.. happy holidays!

UK: BBC One ‘Little Britain’

The new season of Little Britain started last Thursday and instead of its usual debut on BBC Three it got the big seal of approval with a BBC One premiere. To celebrate Red Bee (formerly BBC Broadcast before Australia’s Macquarie Bank bought it) got Tom Baker to be the continuity announcer for the night. The script for the evenings idents were written by Matt Lucas and David Walliams.

I think its brilliant that they went to the trouble to do something different, they draw attention to the idents, and I just love how ingrained idents and continuity announcments seem to be in British pop culture.

Do the boom shack a lack.

UK: BBC One ‘Dock’

I just love BBC One idents, and this is no exception. The first link is for the ident I captured while I was in the UK, and the second is slightly longer version, and is the BBC South East varient.

BBC One is also apparently planning to ditch its current idents for a new set of promos some time in the future, should be interesting to see what they come up with. The Guardian also had an interesting rant about how idents are a waste of money.

Who or what will now replace them? Who cares? Only one thing is certain: a very large sum of money will be spent to provide something new which we could all quite easily live without, something which, you can be sure, will be scrapped after a year or so.

UK: The ident that started it all.

UPDATE: Slightly longer version of this ident.

> RealPlayer Stream (1mb)

This was the first BBC ident I ever saw and not living in the UK I may have never seen it if it wasn’t for the hilarious Dead Ringers which airs on the ABC in Australia.

It was this ident that really got me interested in the television presentation and design genre, and basically the reason I started this site. I’d never seen such effort put into TV branding before this and the quality of it just blew me away.

This was also the first time I heard a ‘continuity announcer’ talk live over an ident and I think this British broadcasting oddity is something we should import to Australia.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did when I first saw it, and I have many more UK idents to come.
