Has a multi-camera show ever gone single-camera?

Update: In answer to my question; Sports Night is the closest thing I’ve found to a multi camera show that became a single camera show.

I’ve been watching How I Met Your Mother lately, and for some of its lameness, it is kind of a cool show. But where does the lameness come from? It’s the four cameras filming it, and the studio audience watching and laughing at it.

Which got me thinking, why has a traditional multi camera sitcom, like How I Met Your Mother, never built a “fourth wall”, lost the studio audience and just matured into a single camera sitcom.

I know Scrubs did an episode that parodied the traditional sitcom by filming part of the show in front a studio audience, I would just love to see it done the other way round, I think it would be a fascinating evolution for a show to change that dramatically, and a chance for a show like How I Met Your Mother to grow a little, and give the writers and directors a chance to expore different aspects of the story.

Trans-network publicity should be good for ratings.

The Chas-iasco made the evening news! I missed Channel Ten but my brother told me he saw a story on it, and I don’t think it made Nine (while still fitting in a Dancing on Ice story), and of course the ABC wasn’t about to pretend it didn’t happen. The Seven report actually isn’t that bad and draws attention to the point Chas was trying to make with the prank.

With the show’s slightly earlier timeslot and Morris Iemma’s otherwise approval it will be interesting to see how next weeks rates.

Its been nearly a year since I last compared the three commercial news opening sequences, and while not much has changed for Seven or Ten (except the Rowe thing), Nine have been tinkering away.

These were all captured last night, so they all compare the same stories, and they are all dominated by the backdown of the Prime Minister over the sale of the Snowy Hydro.

Humanity at Sunrise

For some reason I want to be cynical about this moment, but that little interaction between Sunrise and the Beaconsfield miner really added some humanity to the breakfast show that Today will just never be able to achieve, not even with money.

Even if Todd and Brant have signed themselves to golden handcuffs at the Nine Network I doubt they’ll be able to create anything as real as what happened with Sunrise as the ambulance drove out of Beaconsfield that morning.

I hope Nine pay them millions, because all that money won’t buy them a request for a hug from Jessica Rowe, or that security tag.

It all started in 2004, I was half way through a book about Freud, and having convinced myself I was in “arrested development” I decided to forego seeing a therapist, and in instead I searched it on Wikipedia…

What I found was an article about a television show, and after downloading the first few episodes I was hooked. The show is so self-referencing its insane, and for a family that has been criticised as being cold and unlikeable, I’ve fallen so far in love with the Bluths and made such a connection with them, it makes my family feel like strangers.

Some people have Star Wars, some have Harry Potter, I have Arrested Development, and its the greatest thing to ever happen to me.

I didn’t watch any of the Olympics this year, but I did capture this early this morning.

I’m not sure if it’s made by Seven, or if its something supplied by the IOC, very slick either way.

Words can’t really describe my contempt for shows like Today Tonight, and you’re either going to agree or disagree with me… they pander, incite misguided anger, give misguided hope, and above all waste 60 minutes of primetime television every night.

I don’t claim to be a journalist (and my minor in journalism hardly qualifies me), but I can’t comprehend how any legitimate journalist could happily work for Today Tonight or A Current Affair.

Even Media Watch got a run on Today Tonight earlier this month, the above video is Attard’s response during last nights show.
