The ABC have just relaunched their whole idents package, and on the same day as my graduation, coincidence?
Well probably, but either way the one 60 second ident I’ve seen so far is fantastic, I’m still trying to take it all in, they fit alot into one minute, but there is no doubt that this is a lot better then what were used to seeing, I can’t wait to see how this unfolds.
The networks all have their own take on how to present weather, SBS do the whole world in a minute while Nine barely get past the suburbs of Sydney on their ‘National’ broadcast. ABC seem to take the longest, with a weather report that can at times top three minutes. Ten and Seven insist on sending out weather people to locations around town, Tim Bailey on Ten is far more annoying then Seven’s Nuala Hafner though.
From a design perspective ABC and SBS are at the top of my list. Ten is by far the worst with its depressing little sunshine icons. Nine waste too much time with scroll bars at the bottom of the screen and moving the map around from left to right, and Seven’s map looks OK, but is a bit cartoony.

With Monica Attard being named the new host of Media Watch for 2006 I thought it was about time I uploaded the opener of this season which was brought to us by Liz Jackson. I really liked Liz, but she’s not disappearing altogether as she is returning to Four Corners.

I also thought I’d finally add Spicks and Specks which has a very cool opening with the theme done by The Dissociatives, it was one of my favourite new shows of this year and I’m glad its coming back.

The ABC changed its news opener and theme on Australia Day this year along with new sets and wide screen broadcasting for the bulletin. Given the ten months I’ve now had to digest it, I’d have to say I like it a lot more then I did then, I think the opener is pretty cool, I like how the city names appear and fade as the “ABCNews” banner covers the globe, and while the music isn’t as dramatic as the old theme its not the travesty I probably once thought it was (on a side note, Triple J’s remix of the old news theme remains my ringtone).
I think Virginia Hausegger does an excellent job, and with only Win News to compete with locally she doesn’t have much competition.

Well I had my last exam today, and all going to plan I’ll graduate in Decemeber. So what better way to celebrate then with Clarke and Dawe from the 7.30 Report deconstructing their promo and pointing out how the whole thing is “completely pointless”…

ABC Asia Pacific is the international sibling of everyones favourite national broadcaster, and is available in over 9 million homes in 40 countries. This video has a real “promotional” feel to it with the testimonials and all, but the graphics of the ‘everyones’ and red globe (although very BBCesque) are really cool.

The Promax&BDA awards were held last month and the winner for best ‘Television Image Campaign’ was the ABC with its Anzac day idents. The Anzac day idents are probably the best I’ve seen from the ABC, I didn’t get a chance to record them on the actual day buy luckily I got my hands on this.

I may not like the traditional ABC idents, but they do seem to know what their doing when it comes to promos. This new one for the corporation’s recently redesigned website is fantastic, and follows on the ‘Exercise Your Imagination’ and “painting with light” themes started online.
I would love to see this idea used as the basis for some new ABC idents, but either way the ABC’s website has never looked better, and hopefully its a sign of more changes to come.
The ABC appear to have just (or at least in the past few days) updated the feel of their portal site, abc.net.au. The whole site feels a lot cleaner and I hope they continue the new feel into their idents..
