Zat You, Santa Claus?

I hate non ratings periods, they don’t make sense, if I didn’t download all my television I’d probably appreciate the fact that Nip/Tuck was finally returning to Australian television, but apart from that it doesn’t make sense, its not like we stop watching television!

Anyway, the point I wanted to make was that I love the British tradition of Christmas specials, I first realised it happened when I got into The Office. Its almost like a present from the BBC to enjoy over the break, I can even picture families watching television together.. and all that crap.

This promo from BBC One is a big coming soon to all this years Christmas specials including Little Britain Abroad, The Vicar of Dibley, My Family and The Green Green Grass.

The music is ‘Zat You, Santa Claus?’ by Louis Armstrong.

Maxine quits. Nation loses kickass broadcaster.

I’m not sure when I first got into Lateline, but I do remember it having something to do with Maxine McKew really putting Christopher Pyne in his place during one of the Friday night forums a few years ago.

Since then she has grown on me as an intelligent and honest journalist, a brilliant interviewer and engaging broadcaster. Tony Jones’ send off last night looked back at her amazing body of work and in his own words her ability to conduct “some of the best interviews ever done on Australian television”.

All this of course, in stark contrast to last Friday’s other farewell.

Myf Warhurst hosted last nights My Favourite Album on ABC. The third such special, which has so far included Jennifer Byrne with My Favourite Book and Margaret Pomeranz with My Favourite Film.

These list shows are very simple concepts (E! does about 40 of them a week), the ABC has done an awesome job with them, and as with the first two, I really enjoyed last nights.

The second video is Andrew Hansen doing his “Crazy Warehouse Guy” homage to Radiohead’s OK, Computer album, which is Australia’s 3rd favourite album, see the full list here.

I look forward to next years; My Favourite… TV Show, Blog, Sonnet, Magazine?

Naomi quits. Nation briefly more intelligent.

Naomi Robson’s five minute farewell certainly was a tear jerker (for her at least), and the cavalcade of well wisher was certainly impressive.. Kerry Stokes, and um, Steve Vizard.

Kochie and Mel’s invite to drop by Sunrise reminded me how rarely we saw Naomi outside of TT’s studio cocoon, and may be the reason that its so laughable that someone as unrelatable and insular as Robson thinks she can be Australia’s Oprah.

In summary: Fuck the autocue, I need to save a child you dummies!

John Suchet wants you to rescan your Freeview.

If only the biggest problem Australia had with its digital conversion was reminding people to rescan so they could get another two channels.

This neat promo for FiveLife and FiveUS has John Suchet reminding everyone to rescan for the new Five channels now available on digital.

-Thanks Craig for the video

I’m still trying to grab the rest of these 50 year idents before they stop airing them, and the latest I’ve found features the 2001 ident, when the ABC’s tagline was aptly enough, The National Broadcaster.

I’ve always thought that the best idents series were the ones that followed a simple premise, with a constructed visual grammar, from which a varying and interesting set of channel identifiers could be produced.

Channel 4 for example has idents from the one series shot at dockyards, public housing estates, highways, bowling greens and markets. What they all have in common though is the concept of creating the ‘4’.

These new ITV1 idents (updated since January’s relaunch) are visually pretty splendid, but I think I’m still probably a press release away from quite understanding the whole idea…

Thanks to Graham as always for the UK vids.

The ABC relaunched itself about 11 months ago, the above is a slice of what preceded the current on air look. Captured before I knew what H264 was you’ll have to forgive the quality.
