Tonights episode of The West Wing won an Emmy for outstanding directing for a drama series and also happens to be the first episode I ever saw of the show. Because the ABC is airing two episodes at once viewers are in the unique situation of watching the finale of season four and the start of season five in one sitting tonight.

Basically the Presidents daughter has just been kidnapped and enacting the 25th Amendment he removes himself from office, and because there is no vice president the Republican speaker of the house takes over as president.

The first video is a promo for tonights episode, and the second is the end of last weeks episode along with those dual credits.

(Last time the 25th was used was in 2002 when Cheney took over the powers of the president while Bush got a colonoscopy).

Music superviser for a day

“Cry” by James Blunt

One of my dream jobs has been to be the music superviser on a television show (that is, ever since I read an article about it in jmag and realised it was an actual job).

The combination of music and visuals is incredibly cathartic (for me at least) and its one of the aspects of idents that I really love. I often ask people what it is that they “do” with the music they really love, and for me I tend to create scenes in my head that go with them. I like to think I’m creating the soundtrack to a movie that hasn’t been made yet.

So, what does this have to do with the video?

Well, this promo for the ABC’s East Timor drama “Answered by Fire” has no narration, just music. In this case the track is “Cry” by James Blunt. It seemed like an easy video to play around with, so in this case I thought I’d try it with some different songs overlayed.

The ABC Brand (David and Margaret in bed finally).

partof

> Quicktime Download in H.264 (7.7mb)
> RealPlayer Media (3.3mb)

This sixty second video is a cinema ad for the ABC brand as a whole, it highlights the way that the ABC has infiltrated our national lexicon and generally influenced our culture.

Its more light hearted then the BBC brand pieces (here, here and here), but the ABC is different to the beeb, and I like that they highlighted the creative contribution the ABC has made to Australia.

The video references Playschool, Kath and Kim, Bananas in Pajamas and At The Movies, although I’m not sure what the shower scene is meant to be referencing.

It was made by Sydney agency Host and as always the iPod compatible version is available from the podcast (launches iTunes).

(Thanks for video Mitch)

When we were young and all the Rage

This video is a few weeks old now, but I so rarely see promo’s for Rage I thought I’d share.

The song in the promo is Hope There’s Someone by Antony and the Johnsons.

Speaking of ‘songs in promos’, Triple J have been promoting the crap out of Gnarls Barkley this week, they say they’re the only place in the world with the album and Myf Warhurst will be playing the entire thing back to back from noon today (as in right now).
