The EPG

epgs

All networks in Australia, except the ABC broadcast Electronic Program Guides on Digital TV. For some reason SBS is the only network that broadcasts their EPG in Canberra, on my trip to Sydney however I managed to grab samples from the other three EPG’s.

SBS is my favourite of the bunch (check out their old EPG here). I don’t mind the Seven and Nine EPG’s and the Ten one looks good too but it so horribly out of date its embarrasing. They have icons promoting shows that aren’t on anymore, they have photos of Neighbours cast that have left the show, and I thought Australian Idol was over? Its as if Network Ten don’t realise their even broadcasting it.

The Sydney Sessions

DSC00989.jpg

Spent the night in Sydney on Thursday, didn’t record that much stuff, but did get the long version Network Ten promo and something from Seven.

I really want to like the Ten promo, but I just wish they hadn’t made 90% of it out of stock images and video, its particularly noticeable on the clips that aren’t in 16:9 (look for the one with the teens on the coach). Channel Seven is pretty ordinary, its better then the Prime stuff we get in Canberra, but the whole Gottaloveit thing almost makes ‘Still the One’ look good.

The Weather Sessions

DSC00968

The networks all have their own take on how to present weather, SBS do the whole world in a minute while Nine barely get past the suburbs of Sydney on their ‘National’ broadcast. ABC seem to take the longest, with a weather report that can at times top three minutes. Ten and Seven insist on sending out weather people to locations around town, Tim Bailey on Ten is far more annoying then Seven’s Nuala Hafner though.

From a design perspective ABC and SBS are at the top of my list. Ten is by far the worst with its depressing little sunshine icons. Nine waste too much time with scroll bars at the bottom of the screen and moving the map around from left to right, and Seven’s map looks OK, but is a bit cartoony.

Summer on Ten

Ten are still running their usual idents but I saw this one tonight and thought it wasn’t too bad. Its only really a pseudo ident, but I liked the simple font and colour combination. The promo includes two short videos, the first one has a girl with super-blue eyes which looks cool, but the second one has a girl twirling on the beach and it just looks badly filmed and more spray-tan commercial then ident.

I wonder how long they will stick with this ‘seriously’ thing.

This is the latest in Ten’s ‘Seriously’ campaign, this time its just some guy from Neighbours peeling the word ‘seriously’ off the screen to make way for the word Neighbours.

You can also see the other one from this series here.

The Orange County

Ten are brillant at promoting individual programs, they go to the most trouble in spruiking specific shows and the O.C. is no exception.

This is just a screenshot from their O.C. promo but I think its pretty cool.

Ten, thats what I liked about you.

This ident for Network Ten is a pasthice of animated and live actions shorts representing shows on the network at the moment. This is an updated version of promo they have been running for a while that changes depending on what shows haven’t been cancelled. Currently Rove Live, The O.C., The X Factor and Neighbours are being used to make up the ident with the song “Thats what I like about you” accompanying it.

This is part of the networks very long running ‘Seriously’ campaign which intially started off with some very cool idents, but its been years since then and there is only so much refreshing of an idea you can do. Of the commercial networks in Australia Network Ten has consistantly produced the best idents but it is about time they gave up on ‘Seriously’.

Something Network Ten are consistanly great at though is show specific promotions, recently the ads for Jamies School Dinners and Queer Eye have been brillant, they really are the only commerical network that go to a lot of trouble to promote individual programs, the other networks just tend to use the same template for every show.
