So far on this blog I have managed to feature European television from Norway, Belgium, France, Denmark, Switzerland, and the UK. Which considering how little Australian content is on this site, shows just how lazy I am, and just how proactive and generous my readers are (thanks again!).

Well we now have another European country we can add to that list: Sweden, thanks to Simon who has supplied me these videos from SVT (thats Sveriges Television) the license fee funded national broadcaster of everyones favorite high tax paying country.

I’ve always been fascinated by Sweden and its literally at the top of my “next holiday” list. I don’t know what my attraction is, maybe its the Saab’s, maybe its the The Knife, whatever it is I can’t wait to hopefully visit for myself sometime soon.

Enough about my travel plans though, these videos are a mix of promos, idents and programming from SVT1 and SVT2, for a run down of whats in each video…

The first video is from SVT1 and contains promos and idents, as well as the start of the main news program Rapport and an ident for SVT drama.

In the second video from SVT2 we see titles from various news programs as well as some of the Christmas branding which includes a long shot on a cup of Glögg.

Video number three starts with another news program (which seems to have some story about Saab’s in the opening), along with various idents and a promo for the SVT HD service.

The final video begins with a promo for UR, Sweden’s educational broadcaster followed by more news clips and finishing up with one of those multi network billboards.

You’ll notice throughout these videos, that like the Norwegians the Swedish seem to enjoy using the live talking head continuity announcers.

– Thanks again to Simon for all the videos, cheers!

Typical clean, gorgeous Scandinavian aesthetic that I’ve come to love so much!

By the way…How does one go about recording idents and what not and then uploading them online? Is there a way I can, say, attach my digital camera to my TV directly and record whatever’s on?

It’s easier than that. Just record it on a DVD and rip it using your PC. I’m not sure where to find a free DVD ripper for Windows (I’m a Linux hippie, y’know 🙂 ) though.

This is all very familiair. Although I’m Norwegian, I have probably watched just as much Swedish television as Norwegian in my life, growing up just 30 minutes from the border. These are very nice, but I think SVT should come up with something new soon, as they have used this for quite some time now. By they way, the news programme “Oddasat” is also shown on NRK in Norway. It is a co-production between Norwegian, Swedish and Finnish television.

Don’t be so hard on yourself with the Aussie idents: we’re not exactly brimming with idents and the few we have don’t change much. The only update I can recommend that you haven’t got is Nine’s new summer idents (I haven’t seen that many because, heh, I’m not watching Channel Nine, but they’re there now)

It’s interesting to see that Sami, Finnish and the deaf have their own news programs, but what are the difference between all the other news shows?

im living in sweden for 5 months. and im watching these channels but did you realize jingels and music that playind during time tables or short idents. they are greate even im using as my mobile ringtone. and another time table jingle http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=puWv4pOnmeo

i always tryto catch when svt showing time table!

As for Swedish comedies, most of them are quite mediocre, but Grotesco which is shown in one of these clips is very good and clever. I think you might get some of it even if you don’t understand Swedish.

It can be viewed on http://svt.se/svt/play/video.jsp?a=956483 (SVT is streaming all of its programmes for free on the Internet). The first episode is about a portal to Gothenburg of the 1970s which is found in a cave in Stockholm. The government fails to stop the jolly people from Gothenburg and they invade the capital, leaving it in ruins. Hilarious.

Why do Scandinavian idents have subtle
yet great visual impact?

As Grace of Will and Grace once said,
“Ang Lee: slow paced, but visually stunning.”

That’s funny, “Typical clean, gorgeous Scandinavian aesthetic…” most of the SVT 1 design was done in New York city.

SVT have been over-using red for about a year now. it was better before with more pastel and bluish colors. having red as prime color in the news program is just silly, red evoces angry and upset feelings. i´m an aestetic and I get upset every time :). the best thing about swedish headline news show “aktuellt” is that it is calm , compared to other countries, very reliable, and that our weather girl is a 45-year old heavy rocker with a gun´s n roses-haircut. 🙂 he has been doing that since the eighties and he is allowed to keep his frill, it´s awesome. 🙂 he is very sympathetic. in recent years he got a haircut but it was just because he wanted to himself. 🙂
