For the first time in six years, Five is giving itself a rebrand. The new look network has dropped the lower case type, and replaced it with a logo that’s just a little reminiscent of way BBC One do things.
Coming on-air for the first time last night, the look isn’t the only thing to change, with a new approach to promotions and ad breaks also coming into effect.
While the new look is just as slick as any other UK network, it manages to lack some the unity of other network idents, and although I’ve only seen this selection, I’m pretty confused as to what its all meant to mean, if anything.
For me though, Channel Five are going to have a hard time topping this.

Im a big fan of DixonBaxi but some of the FIVE idents look very similar to a piece mate steinforth did a while back, maybe they collaborated on the idents but I have a feeling they didnt for some reason. I hope im wrong though

Mate did the animation for Five too

While not particularly consistant, they do represent the fact that Five has transformed into more of a niche channel than the cheap mainstream station they used to be. It’s ITV1 with the problem!

That is… awkward.

How exactly is it awkward?

Well, have you ever seen something like http://idents.tv/videos/NewFiveIdentsSuper.html in real life? I know I haven’t. It feels so strange seeing a MTV-ish look on a major UK channel.

Well I can’t really relate to you since MTV UK (including TMF UK) doesn’t have the package your describing.
Very nice looking idents. Always a pity that Australian networks can’t be so creative.

I have a feeling that the only thing that’ll stay consistent is the logo – and the bits after will be refreshed constantly, much like MTV.

As an aside, they updated FIVER to match the FIVE typface but the idents themselves are the same but with some new Kaiser Chiefs music. five US is the same for now.

I think it’s a more creative approach – much freer than before. The BBC One idents are nice, but hugely contrived and lacking in soul IMHO so I don’t draw comparisons too closely between those and Five.
I agree with Niko – a consistent logo with everything changing around it. Interesting approach…..

Anyone know the name of the music playing in the background of the first video?
