There’s nothing quite like a natural disaster to compare news broadcasters, and with the flooding going on in the UK, and journalists standing knee deep in water all over the country, it seemed like a good time.

Opening Sequence Sunday: Glastonbury 2007

While the Big Weekend is certainly big, its the Glastonbury music festival that you hear about around the world. And at £145 a ticket you’d probably expect no less than a line up that includes: The Killers, Bloc Party, Arctic Monkeys, Lily Allen, Kaiser Chiefs, The Who, Björk, Maximo Park, Editors and heaps more.

As with the Big Weekend, the BBC’s coverage is hard to escape, with the Red button brining you four extra channels, along with sets on BBC Two, BBC Three, and BBC Four. On the wireless Radio 1, 6 Music, Radio 3, Radio 4 and Asian Network are all broadcasting from the event along with on-demand video streams online. Even Radio 4’s half century old Today Programme is broadcasting from there.

The national broadcasters commitment to relaying these festivals to the rest of the country is pretty incredible, it would be like the ABC televising the Big Day Out, which I don’t see happening anytime soon. Its also an excellent example of the power of digital television… and a well funded public broadcaster.

The Morning Show’s war on Nine and Ten.

BBC One launched two new idents over the weekend. This is the first of them, with a space exploration theme, the standard remains very high, and while they’re probably not my favourite you can’t deny the quality of production.

The Sanest Days are Mad: Radio 1’s Big Weekend.

If you live in the UK, your lucky enough to be waking up to BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend, the largest free ticketed event in Europe, and if your waking up in Preston, you’re even luckier because your probably going to it.

Featuring a huge line up of acts including but not limited to; Bloc Party, Maximo Park, Razorlight (the first video features this song), Scissor Sisters (second video) and Kaiser Chiefs, the closest free event we would have to this in Australia would be Triple J’s One Night Stand.

Almost as impressive as the acts themselves though is the BBC’s coverage of the event, which spans not only Radio 1, but also nightly highlights on BBC Three and live coverage of the whole thing on the red button’s BBCi. The UK really seems to have embraced the promise of digital television, hopefully Australia will too.. eventually.
