If you flick over to SBS right now, you’ll catch Big Love, a show that I’ve already gone on quite a bit about. The opening sequence however, deserves a mention. It’s classic HBO, a little surreal, a little very symbolic, accompnied by what Paul McCartney calls the best song ever written “God Only Knows” by The Beach Boys.
Update: Get some insight into the symbolism of the opener with this comment.

Samantha Armytage has taken over Lisa Wilkinson’s role on Weekend Sunrise alongside Dear or No Deal host Andrew O’Keefe.
In today’s broadcast she was joined by Seven Brisbane’s Talitha Cummins on news reading duties, but I’m not sure if that is a permanent change.

While the Big Weekend is certainly big, its the Glastonbury music festival that you hear about around the world. And at £145 a ticket you’d probably expect no less than a line up that includes: The Killers, Bloc Party, Arctic Monkeys, Lily Allen, Kaiser Chiefs, The Who, Björk, Maximo Park, Editors and heaps more.
As with the Big Weekend, the BBC’s coverage is hard to escape, with the Red button brining you four extra channels, along with sets on BBC Two, BBC Three, and BBC Four. On the wireless Radio 1, 6 Music, Radio 3, Radio 4 and Asian Network are all broadcasting from the event along with on-demand video streams online. Even Radio 4’s half century old Today Programme is broadcasting from there.
The national broadcasters commitment to relaying these festivals to the rest of the country is pretty incredible, it would be like the ABC televising the Big Day Out, which I don’t see happening anytime soon. Its also an excellent example of the power of digital television… and a well funded public broadcaster.

This week saw the start of Channel Seven’s new morning show, called The Morning Show. The Adam Bowland produced chat show is pitted head-to-head with Nine’s Morning’s with Kerri-Anne and Ten’s 9am with David and Kim.
The Morning Show definitely looks the best of the three thanks to the Sunrise studio, and from what I’ve seen seems the most tolerable, but I’m pretty sure 22 year olds who work full time aren’t the target audience, so I’ll leave my opinion at that.

Late last month, the only news program in the UK to focus solely on international news got a shake up. It went from being The World, in the first video, to World News Today in the second video, and is now hosted by Zeinab Badawi. The show is described as:
unashamedly serious; but that doesn’t mean it’s not engaging or stimulating.
And it probably fits in very well on BBC Four where it airs. Why the change you ask? Well you can read all about why from the BBC itself which blogged about the changes here, in a brilliant example of openness, that kept the viewer in the loop for once.
Not getting BBC Four, or living in the UK, I haven’t seen either shows, all I can say though… is I’m glad they kept the wood flooring.

Tracy, Jessica, Sarah, Kellie.. and now Lisa. A new female host for the Nine Network’s Today show started yesterday, and while the usual first-day-of-a-new-host ratings were up, they weren’t as high as when Mrs Murdoch started her run, and quite frankly Nicole Kidman could host the show, but after the first day curiosities, the ratings would go back to what they are always are.
I have to agree with Crikey, and ask why “is Karl Stefanovic a protected species? After all, he and Richard Wilkins have been tried and found wanting by viewers — so why aren’t they boning candidates?”. They’re rumours that the show will be making the Sunrise-esque move to Park Street to be part of the city bustle, but besides people holding “watch Sunrise” banners in the background I’m not sure what good it will do.
The show needs to relaunch completely, new name, new set, and an actual focus, well, a focus beyond just copying Sunrise. If Sunrise is the friendly breakfast show, why not make Today the serious news breakfast show? Karl’s already dressed for it.

In the first video Dead Ringers pokes fun at all the standing-up-and-walking-around that goes on ITV’s Theatre of News, the second video is from the actual ITV News where just as much standing-up-and-walking-around goes on, although slightly less dancing.
I’m really surprised that none of Australia’s television networks have copied this approach to news yet, most of our commercial news is so trashy now anyway, it might as well have fancier sets and more camera swoops.

SBS World News Australia relaunched on Monday last week. The above is a selection of tonights episode to give you a feel of what its all about. The new opener (with Google logo in tote) makes good use of satellite imagery, and the weather, aptly I guess uses a Google Earth feeling look, which while realistic is also distinctive enough to feel fresh compared to the rest on your television screens.
