The 4.30 News on Seven has shifted from its Melbourne home with Rebecca Maddern to a Sydney studio with Mike Amor.

Rosanna is clearly in the Sydney studio, in the zoom out before the 2nd ad break you can see the large logo and the News Central sorounds.

7news at 10.30 is being done by BEc in Melbourne until the morning show starts sometime in the next 2 weeks. Our fab local reporter, Rosanna Mangiarelli was filling in on the 4.30 news. Havn’t been wtching 2day, so i don’t know if she was on 2day. Just goes to show you that we adeladeans have the right people to present the 4.30 news. Shame it couldn’t have been done out of Adelaide.

Yeah, i think i like Rosanna Mangiarelli over Sam or Kyile too. Has more of a proper news feel. I think that the best Seven News studio is Australia is the Brisbane one. They have a really well lit, clean looking studio. They have a Seven Logo above their news desk, but its a red ‘7’ on a nice wood backing.

That’s what the Sydney one looks like too. I like the Melb one too and the Adelaide one looks quite good. They are all the same essentially except for Perth’s.

The one in sydney is on a blue backing and looks a little ugly. Outstanding coverage from Seven News Sydney as they go to air tonight. 5 live crosses to differnt reporters in different locations across the state with parts of newcastle declared natural disaster zones. Three reporters in Newcastle all live crosses alone. All this by 6.08!! Well done Seven!! Nine syndey have had 3 live crosses. One in sydney city?? boring.

Wow that is pretty good! They are the best. I missed the start of the news here but in the recap of top stories before the weather the sydney weather was one of them.

OMG!!! I think they have given Ann Sanders the flick!!!! She was back today doing our Sydney updates, yet not doing the Morning News?

OH MY GOD! Look I am happy that Bec is doing the Morning News out of Melb but poor ANN! She did say she’d be back after the start of the morning show. maybe they are too busy in the martin place studio preparing that they can’t do it from there.

In reference to earlier discussion on news updates in the various cities: From wikipedia: “Until August 2003 there was also a late news bulletin, but it was axed and replaced with a 3 to 5 minute news update at 10.30pm approx, in addition to the hourly updates throughout the evening. These updates are presented from each mainland state capital until 9.30pm, at which time they revert to national updates presented from the Sydney studios. Melbourne is the only city that still receives a local 9.30 update with Peter Mitchell, they still receive the 10.30 National update.”
As I said we don’t get a 9.30 national.

Nick after you told me that i uploaded that onto wikipedia lol!! I also started the process of daytime updates with sydney, melbourne and brisbane but someone has come in and put it in in more detail. Well done to whoever that was. I hope you right about Ann! She was off last week as Bec did your updates and ours. But today Ann was back. Maybe they are too busy with the whole morning show business to have the morning news out of sydney. Anyway i caught the mornig news today, your right you can tell that its out of Melbourne. The fly-in was a give away as was the better ad more clear projection of the control room. The AFL focus was a lot larger then the NRL in sport and there are more reports from melbourne news readers. But thats to be expected i guess. It didn’t worry me and i was nice to see more varity of news. AND GREAT to see they only gave that whore paris hilton a small mention. Ian Ross back in Sydney today after 3 weeks off. Not sure if Sam is on 4.30 news today? But Chris Baths is there for updates tonight. Poor Ann is only doin her 12,12.30,1,1.30,2pm updates atm. Ian did the 2.30 which is rare! normally i’d expect Sam or Sara to do that one and the 3pm one. Ian normally only starts the 3.35 one sometimes not till 4pm.

I know, I have been reduced to watching the “afternoon edition”! I feel so dirty. That Michael Usher is so sleazy! And the intro look like a neurofen ad and the news quality is the pits. Some stories look like they were made on video! The only story on the morning news that was from a melb reporter that I can think of was the one about the Zimbawean umpire in geelong from Nick Maccallum. It was one our news last night but even when made in Sydney the morning news would often feature this sort of story from our sunday news. And sport of coarse but since 7 shows the AFL it only makes sense that they give it more time but Dylan and Bec were chatting away weren’t they, but i like that sort of thing. So it isn’t just me? The screen behind the desk and video quality is generally better. No technical stuff ups at all. There was just one on 9 with a live cross. And Bec just goes from strength to strength. Last night there was a bit of a stuff up here, at 9.50pm during What About Brian, an intro for the weather update came on but instead of Rob Gell giving us the latest they played a news voice over style ad from during the day. It sounded like Alicia Grabowski doing it. It had “Tonight at 6” across the bottom. OOPS! P.S. good work on wikipedia. I added that the morning news had been out of melb these past few weeks.

Haha, i guessed that might have been you. Yes the screen quality was not as clear when in sydney. This was a issue that grabbed the attention of Brisbane viewers when Sharyn Ghidella was presenting from martin place during the final weeks of her pregnancy. Viewers complained that the screen quailty was fuzzy like and colouring was different, not to mention that they never did fly-ins, (brisbane do really wide almost side on to the news desk fly-ins) they cut straight from Sharyn to Pat Welsh after the breaks as apossed to before with little chatter and camera zoom out, so that you can she them sitting side by side. The in the fly out just switched camera at the end so that the big seven on blue backing could not be seen. Yes it was a little entertaining to see Bec and Dylan having a little chat. i like the way he goes “i understand that your winning an office tipping comp Bec” as apossed to “i understand your winning THE or OUR office tipping competition” just one of those small considerate things they have done to not make it melboureised, sydney are guilty as sin when it comes to stuff like that. Well i also meant to say other news reporters, not just melbourne ones. 4.30 news barely uses other reports. For me its almost like watching another edition of Seven Sydney 6pm news, only earlier. Ian Ross back tonight was his cheeky self say how much he missed Matthew White “Good to have you back Rosco” – Matt “I missed you Matt, i could hardly bare to be away from you any longer” – Ian. He then went on at the end of the news to thank Chris Bath. “A special and big thankyou to Cris Bath for filling in for me over the past few week, she has done a wonderful job and is a top rate news reader with great talent. I’ll look forward to having yor company tomorrow night, Till then well leave you with images of the storms ravaging NSW, Im Ian Ross.

oops, few spelling mistakes there. My Bad! Anyway I meant to mention that i do like the sydney weather over the melbourne weather. Our graphics outside boxes look better. Also the reason that the screen quality in Sydney is poor compared to that of other places as suggested by someone else, was that because sydney was the first place to have the studio, 3 months before other studios accross the country meaning that they have an older screen and it’s quality isn’t as good. I think that Ian would really like to see Chris Bath take his position at the end of the year. If she was to become the countries only solo primetime weekday news anchor in the country she would be following in the footsteps of the only other women in Australian history to do so – Melbournes Jennifer Keyte who did back in 1990.

7news had superb coverage of the flooding.By the way 1 week till the mornring show starts, meaning that its 1 week till anns back(at 11.30)Why 11.30, because TMS finishes at 11 and they need time to convert the sttudio to 7news.So they have half an hour while a pre taped show(probaly raggs} goes to air to convert studio.

I was sort of hoping it would be Food4Life. I do like that Cindy Sargon, she used to host Melbourne Woman. I assume Stu meant only solo weekday female anchor. Obviously there are many solo men. Melbourne isn’t big on 2 anchors apparently, since Mal Walden and Helen Kapalos on Ten are the only ones. Seven used to have David Johnstone and Anne Fullwood and many before them. Naomi Robson presented our 6pm news for a while ages ago. Funny that weekends seem to be where the women come out on there own these days. Jen was fired from 7 in the 1990s when new owners came in. There was huge outrage in Melbourne and ratings hit the floor, they begged her to come back but she went to 9 to host good medicine and the like. Then she returned to 7 as weekend newsreader a few years back to applause from the floor crew apparently. Clearly Martin PLace is in over its head with so many shows being made there. Send tt back to melb, with or without the insepid Anna Coren, to free up that floor space. And while I don’t want Ann out of a job, it has been nice having Bec on the morning news.

Yes, i think Ann will be back hosting, they need Bec for fill-in roles and weekend sunrise. Yes i meant ‘female solo weekday presenter’

Two anchors are in almost all states on most channels in Austraila. Seven and Nine in Sydney and Melbourne are the only places that have Solo anchors (all male) on weekdays. Weekends are all female apart from Nine sydney that has Mike Munrro. Seven and Nine in every other market to the best of my knowledge are paired up, adelaide nine is an exception since the death of Kevin Crease (i think thats his name). Weekends on all channels in all states are solo anchored.

Sydney didn’t like the news anchors paired up at the news desk either. Ann and Ross got the boot from their roles back in 2003 due the poor ratings from such a format. I have to say watching Geoff Parry doing a General News report out of his home town Perith and having Alea Calen doing the political report from canberra on the 4.30 news today was strange. They both seemed uncomfortable. Does the news bar on the bottom of the 4.30 news annoy anybody else? its so big, they need to reduce its size. Lots to talk and bitch about today. Your spot on with the over production talking place in Martin Place. Its not friggin Epping studios! They screwed up the sunrise set so that they could make room for that bloody morning show set. ARGH!!

Do anyother states still use the newsbar durning their News at 6? or even updates? Sydney dont for anything, brisbane do for weather and maybe sport too? not sure about updates. Also the openers in diferent states is massive. look at an S.A opener on youtube. They have a Seven News small bit on the bottom lefthand side, no title bar that runs the length on the screen.

And the 4.30 news never goes for the whole 30 minutes including (ad time) it finishes about 4.55! pisses me off! They never have much sport news either.

I like the 4.30 doesn’t do sport. When they first moved to Syd they trialled sport but then dropped it. Even when it was in Melb they didnt do sport. The news bar was much thinner in Melb and solid black, i like the new one. It has never filled the full 30mins but it usually finishes about 4.57, today it was very early. on our 6pm news there is no news bar but during updates there is one giving the weather around the state. I found it strange with the reporter swap this afternoon. Whatever happened to Gemma Haines? I like her doing political reporting. I have seen SA openers, it is unsettling. Watching a report from Mia Greves on our 6pm about some stupid kids with guns at a school camp.

COOL! David Brown is actually doing a story on the news tonight! On how Mt Bulla is the first alpine town in the world to build a treatment plant to recycle sewrage to be used to make snow. It was very good.

Now one from Sandy Roberts about the oldest living premiereship player. Also we’ve got new slide graphics. For things like the financial report, when someone is on the phone or quotes and pics etc. Quite slick. they started a few days ago and you may have seen them on the morning news but the 4.30 were the old ones.

its better if sydney and melbourne have solo preseneters, clearly they experimented with dual anchors, and it failed

Gemma Haines only does weekend reporting from Canberra now. She took a job reporting for the Canberra Times. Sara Goren always does news stories in sydney, almost any climate stories or global warming crap – she reports! Waste of talent for her not to report. Yet to see the new slide graphics. The afternoon edition on Nine has a (i hate to admit) really good sports rap and their sports anchor is ok, i dont mind her. She was live from melbourne today-not sure if she always does? latly on sunrise they have being doing ad break lead-ins and lead-outs of the Melbourne broadcast centre. not sure where the camera is positioned but its up high (at least 10 floors) and faces the front of the building, positioned to the left of the BIG 7 sign and about 500 to 600 metres away. You couls see both the Telstra dome and studio in one shot.

There is a big telstra building across from the 7 building but I havent seen sunrise in a while so i can’t comment. The seven building is attached to telstra dome. The NNN afternoon sport reader, whose ame escapes me, she is famous, is always live from melbourne however she doesn’t do anything for our news here.

I see that your in battle with the cartman and the likes of over at http://www.australian-media.com nick! I never bothered joining that site, the people there have their head so far up their own arses!! Good luck with it all. Entertaining read ill amdit and great for video. They dont take on board what others say or think. From this blog a have taken or board and had my eyes opened to many of the flaws of seven (mainly the 4.30 news). To think at the very start of this blog i supported Mike Amor over Bec Maddern (must have been on crack) and was all ‘it doesn’t make a differece where its shot from’! I do belive that Seven Melbourne produced the best 4.30 news in the country. The 10.30 news from sydney is great, but the 4.30 not as much. I prefer the weather graphics in the sydney made news to that of the 4.30 news’ weather from melbourne. But Melbourne have a much more clean & clear projection then that of sydney the lighting is better and Bec was best for the role.

There was some sort of alarm or something going off in the tt studio tonight. Not good enough. I’ve just about had it with those forums. People on the internet, generally, are so stupid and as the old saying goes: never argue with an idiot, people might not know the difference! It was, as Sandy Roberts told all of Melbourne, Peter Mitchell’s birthday today. Sandu directed viewers in Peter’s suburb which I have forgotten to buy ear muffs cos Peter got an electric guitar for his birthday. Earlier they had a story about some Labor candidate had described her potential electorate as Kath and Kim country so they had a few jokes about that and Peter said Sandy power walks like Kell. Also in today’s The Age Green Guide their feature article with double page spread was about 7 has become melbourne’s leader in news after over a decade of shakiness and anchor changes and how the Melb News director, steve Carey, believes peter was the first anchor they could really get behind after Jennifer was fired. It talked about 9’s problems too incl staff defections, budget cuts and a non-local feel.

I missed TT? lol how funny! Chris Bath will be doing updates tonight? Not sure what happened to sam? Seven is becoming a strong leader in news. Nine piss me off, they think they can just sit back and do the same old thing and get the ratings they want, well guess what? Times are changing Nine and people are making the switch!!

Oh i totally agree, obviously. Especially in Melb, 7news’s commitment to local content is so strong. I looked but infortunately that Green Guide article was not online. Shame really, it was spot on. Apparently Tracy Grimshaw announced at the start of ACA 2nite that it was from Melbourne “again”…Let me tell you, just cos 7 stuff from melb is better doesn’t mean 9 is. I flicked back and forth a bit, ACA is the pits. They rehashed Diana’s life again, it seemed to be a thinnly veiled attempt just to steal US contennt, it was in 4:3! And then they had the most stupid story on small cars and how when you rock up to buy one there are tonnes of on road costs…WELL DERR! and you can talk a lot of them off or if you’re willin to buy 06s or certain colours you get good deals. A mate of mine just this week bought an 06 Mitsubishi Colt LS manual, which rrp for 17490 but cos he took a manual and an 06 he paid 15990 drive away at Rex Gorell Mitsu geelong! That is a steal considering it has a 6 stacker CD and Alloys. I am off topic but just an example showing how way off ACA was. It was an ACA made story yet much of it was too in 4:3! WTF!!??

If you caught the morning news, the last from Melbourne, you would’ve seen the new slides a couple of times. Clearly only Melb uses them cos stories from Canberra and Syd did not use them. You would’ve seen them in the story about the Kerang victim funeral, it was the first slide, not the 2nd and during the AFL wrap up with Dylan Howard, for the list of games this weekend. I will miss Bec and the quality of the melb made bulletin. The lighting in the studio is so good, and it is a bit diff to our 6pm lighting.

Yeah, morning show starts monday. Whats this nick,it was mitch’s B-day? He’s 47 now isnt he?Just referring to some of my earliest postsn this blog, This blog has really changed my viewing habits. As numbers dwinle on NNN, they skyrocket at 7news! For example, the once C-grade 7news now got 423000 viewers up against NNNs 389000 in Melbourne. Now im not such a biasboy for NNN,Today, and ACA. In fact, its been 4 months since i watched any of the three in full. Anybody realise that Sunrise got a light revamp so they could fit TMS s set in.Now just wanted to ask you Nick, have you fully recovered from the dreaded “afternoon Edition” virus? You clean agagin after being “dirty”? LOL

It was a rough couple of days, let me assure you, but look I’ve pulled myself together and I’m just taking it one day at a time. Apparently you’re not alone in changing your vieweing habits. I moved from Sydney to the dreaded Geelong in 2003, in Sydney I generally watched 7news but when I came here there was such fuss over NNN and how Jo Hall presenting on Sundays was the highest rating show of the week, so I watched, sometimes giving 7 a look too, but then during the 2004 Olympics I started watching 7news religiously. It was soon after the time of the new graphics being brought in which I loved and while then sport anchor, Jim Wilson, was in Athens they replaced him with Bev O’Connor who I really liked and I never went back to 9. Peter Hitchener is creepy and old anyway. And Jo Hall, while commendable, is a bit fearesome for me, and she is no Jen Keyte.

Nick you should try living in Canberra, just about everything Win so including the news is in 4:3 viewing, its crap. Its funny because in canberra we only have one local made 6pm news that gets out rated by seven news, which we get the Sydney feed. If i really wanted to (not that i’d feel the need) i could watch both Nine and Seven News from syndey in different timeslots but why bother, same goes for TT and ACA differnt time slot, seven winning in the ACT. When in Melbourne a few months back i loved Seven Melbourne. Jen rocks my socks! She just seems so natural and in control, we get updates from Jo Hall (she does saturday and sunday nationally after 8.30) and she looks like she has had botox gone very wrong! Stiff and looking like a 70 old whore!

People at Aust media are talking about the Adelaide opener and how its different with music and their graphics: also they talk for ages (maybe 3 seconds) after they have focused on the presenter and the music stopped.

Nine is so technologically backward. They are gunna sell their old tv centres in Willoughby in Syd and Richmond in Melb and relocate and use the profits to fund the network’s digital upgrade which is what 7 did years ago. 10 too. The 10 centres in Melb and Syd are quite nice, both look like they were built mid 1990s. The Melb one, the Como Centre is also a hotel and shopping centre. posh. It is in South Yarra.

In the dreaded Geelong Advertiser today there is an article on Dylan Howard’s page about how Rebecca Maddern will be missing her precious cats games as she’ll be in sydney for weekend sunrise every weekend. She is the unofficial number one female ticket holder and very porochial the article says. It says she, and her her husband Glong property magnate james wilson, are moving back to a bayside house in geelong.

Well at least that means she isn’t leaving Melbourne. They again were using Becs promo in sydney this arvo, but It Chris Bath presenting??? Major screw up.

Certainly sounds that way. I don’t uderstand what it is about the Sydney news room that makes it have more stuff ups than Melbourne. I wonder what it is like in the other cities. I do love Bec but she looses points with me over loving Geelong, not the team, the town. Especially since she would know the joys of Melb. With most Geelongians, it is like describing colour to a blind man when you tell them that Geelong isn’t the best place on earth.

Well, DUUUUHH! Nick ,Jen rocks , Jos a monster. I used to like Jo, but shes aeging like shes never aged before! In Adelaide, your 2 weekend choices are Graeme Goodings on 7 and Georgina Mc Guiness on 9. Grames such an excellent newsreader, he does it all with Calm and poise, like Sandra Sully. To be honest, all I watch on 9 is Kerri-Anne, Australias Funniest Home videos, and the occasionaL quizmania.

I can’t think of anything that I watch on 9, I used to wacth Motorway Patrol and The Closer but they’re not on anymore.

Just saw the 7news Melb 2pm update, it was just a voice over, no desk presenter and it was a man whose voice I did not recognise.
