one question remains- hitch or mitch? who rocks melbourne?

Peter Mitchell is by far the best. Sandy Roberts is funny, cheeky and great and David Brown is the best weather presenter in Aus if you ask me. Helps too that he is also the only fully qualified meteorologist…he invented the 7 day forecast for 7melbourne. Jennifer Keyte, Tim Watson and Rob Gell also win hands down for me on weekends. 9 don’t even have a weekend weather presenter! CHEAP! And 7’s fill ins are great, being Rebecca (OBVIOUSLY) and Michael Felgate or Dylan Howard on sport. The other main melb news readers, i use the term main loosly, being Mal Walden and Helen Kapalos on ten are also quite good but they just have the dregs reporters, terrible news and so many technical problems. I must say however, i wish ten had kept Mignon Henne on instead of getting in Helen. There was an article in the Herald Sun recently about Mal slagging off one of the stories on air, saying it was trash, it has about the qantas hostie.

Well if has been changed the Seven Afternoon News, it hasn’t happened yet! Kylie Gillies has been doing it all this week. And today she said “see you next week”, if samantha was back she would have just said that’s all from the 4.30 news team, have a great weekend etc etc. Maybe Sam has been shifted too. They should just send it back to melb with rebecca already

Jennifer Keyte was also back today, in melb, after a holiday of about 3 weeks also, Rebecca Maddern was filling in.

Oh dear that is a concern. That is the one thing I noticed about sydney news, the anchors have a bit more chit chat than the melb ones. The closest we get is the news presenter, particularly if it is rebecca maddern asking the sports guy how their footy team went, in bec’s case geelong. It is usually just a quick sentence or two, however sandy roberts will sometimes go on making sly jokes etc that will send peter mitchell laughing while he tries to read the lotto numbers or something. But in syd there seems to be a bit more chit chat, more jokes and bit more gimicky. It is strange how man subtle differences there are between newses on the same network in different cities, like in melb just before weather they recap top stories and they recently just got rid of the fly-over of melb in the creidts and the “Seven News live from Melbourne with Peter Mitchell” voice over. and the stock market results are in diff places, in melb they are in the 2nd news segment, just before the more light story/ies

I think they have a bit of an anchor shortage going on, with people on and off with holidays. I like Kylie Gillies, I’m really warming to her.

7melb is so good, I was in sydney not long ago and I really think it is better here. NNN is the dregs. I liked Jo hall at first but she is a really fearesome woman, scary, and looking pretty hagged, I mean Jen Kyte is pretty thin but Jo Hall is scary. I love Jen cos she has the posh Toorak accent, like K & K’s Prue and Trude. Peter is great, said to be the best dressed anchor in Melb, and Sandy Roberts is a hoot and David brown knows his weather. On weekends Tim Watson on sport is pretty good and Rob Gell is a fast talker but good. He did NNN’s weather for about 30 years before they fired him in favour of Livinia Nixon so 7 offered his the weekend weather spot. 7News melb is fairly aggressive in advertising, they have done a long series of ads on how they are the first on the ground with reporters accross the city. The ads have taken various formats from imposing the news feed on melb and geelong landmarks to what they are, Jen and Peter talking in the newsroom with cuts of some of the high profile stories and one with Peter standing in front of the Seven News ticker opp fed sq talking about how in melb you have a choice when it comes to news on the days events…and the mandatory thanks for making the switch to 7news. It is tt letting down the team quality wise now, since it moved to syd and Anna took over it has hit rock bottom and got out the jack hammer.

No she is so smarmy and some of those segways are appalling. There was a feature in teh age green guide about how ppl thought tt would get better under her but it has gotten worse.

Well i quite like seven melbourne, its refreshing to see some different faces, in sydney you have the same anchors all the time. Because they are local and national. I did catch a feed of the start of seven news sydney tonight from a friend. They had a major screw up, ur right nick, sydney is full of errors. Chris started by ready out the first three top stories to make the bulletin which was followed by the “This is seven news…..With Chris Bath” come over while we were still watching a forth story intro come up on the screen with no chris talking, they tried to do a quick fix and cut the music and city flyover and went straight to chris after her “good evening” we didn’t see her face till after about 5 seconds of talking. Its things like this that make people switch to nine, i hate them but they never have screw ups, once in sydney weekend news they lost three stories in a row and gave up and went to an ad break only to come back and go straight to sport at only 6.10pm and they did an early rap up finishing at 6.23ish. Terrible. And i hate that we dont do a “This is seven news, live from the studios of _______ with______” they do it in melbourne and queensland, not sure about S.A or W.A . We just get a ‘This is Seven News….with _______! its crap.

Also on the first night of Sevens “beautiful sunday” we lost our last 8.30 update, after a few seconds of black, it crossed into a feed for melbourne, with Jen. I noticed that with your updates you get a news bar accross the bottom. We dont. in QLD they get one for their weather during the news. Chris Bath is aging look at her neck on monday and tuesday night for you melbourne people during the national updates at 9.30 and 10.30. What time in melbourne do yo get ur first and last up dates for the news on weekends. with our week day ones Ian ross only does the afternoon updates from 3pm till 6 , reads the news then heads home. The 7.30 and 8.30 updates are presented by the late update anchor with a projetion of the sydney city for a background. On weekend our updates start at 12noon as 10-20 second anchorless updates with few stories. they have Ancchor updates from about 3pm sometimes they dont start till 4ish.

NNN melb doens’t have a weather person on weekends but as I said 7 has Rob Gell. Weekends in Melb aren’t cheap cos often the Sunday news would be the highest rating programme of the week. At least when NNN was at its peak. As for weekda updates they star at 1pm generally with Rebecca Maddern or Karen O’Sullivan. It will be a full anchored one on the hour till 4 and anchorless short ones on the half hour. Then Peter Mitchell will show up after the 4.30 news and do one at 5.30 and 5.50. We have recently lost our “live from melbourne, 7news with Peter Mitchell” altogether and fly over cos i guess they needed the time to a news recap before weather. Also the fly over footage was a few yrs old and Melb’s skylie has changed dramatically. Evening updates are at 7.30, 8.30 and 9.30 with Peter Mitchell (in his sign off he says he will back with updates throughout the evening) and a weather update about 8 or 9 with David Brown. During the news updates there is a ticker with the full weather. Then we have the national wrap up from sydney at 10.30. Weekends I am not sure about the daytime ones, i feel they start at about 1 and I think Jennifer does them. Usually to suit the footy. Then in the evening there are less of them I think compared to weekdays. But still around the 7.30 and 8.30 mark. All with Jennifer still and with the live shot of Melb behind her. Then oddly enough Rob Gell does a weather update during What About Brian at about 10.05! But certainly we get very very few technical issues, they are very very rare. And certainly nothing to the scale you’ve described. I;ve only ever seen a story stuff up or audio on a live cross not work. The team at the Melbourne Broadcast Centre seem a lot better. And the cameras they use seem so much sharper. Everything looks sharper and cleaner out of Melb. You can go the 7centre at Docklands, they have a cafe there called the Broadcast Cafe which ajoins the news studio and often the curtains are open and you can see the Bec do the daily updates. So cool. It was also where the Naomi tt set was. Just opp the news set. NNN melb looks so pov, they have the cheapest digitally put in backdrop, whereas 7’s is on a screen, and they only recently got a new desk. They have also poached several 7 reporters. Heath O’laughlin and someone else, both from sport but it’s ok, 7 poached Mia Greves from them. She is one of the best news reporters going around but generally we have a great team in melb for news and sport. I had noticed Chris Bath looked aged when i was in Syd in summer. Jen is older but i think she looks pretty good. Wow that was long…

So in melbourne you dont get the 9.30 pm national update on weekdays? i wonder if they do in S.A and W.A i know they do Queensland. The team up there are really great. Kay And Rob are loved in Qld , especially Kay!

Kylie Gillies is still presenting the 4.30 news. Is this a full time thing?

I love Docklands, the National bank has its HQ there, so does the AFL, Bendigo Bank i belive is shifting there as is The Age. There are more majors headed there too. But finally, 5 months after tt left melb, it has a new set! It is fairly nice too as are the new graphics, tho the composite city scape is a touch 2001 for me. But the audio and video is back on par with the melb version i think. Still don’t care for anna tho.

lol yes she was crap at it takes two lmao!!! And with the national updates look at the wickipedia page for 7 news, its all there. Its meant to be national, coz they change the background to the pokies lol and its only bout 30-40 seconds. Its not sydney story based either, it has national stories.

I have seen WIN news canberra, looks like it is made in a tiny office with a handycam! lol. Well at any rate Melb certainly doesn’t get that 9.30, as I said at 9.30 we get Peter Mitchell in front of the live Melb skyline. I also found out that the “pokies” are at the melb centre. If you watch, it is the same footage everyday behind ann, it was obviously recorded during an ep of Dancing, but the way you can tell it melb is that the main feed on the screens is showing clearly identifiable melb ads including for 7news with peter. I have also seen interior footage of the building, in tt stories and during the good friday appeal. Makes sense however since all the feeds originate in Melb.

The prob with wikipedia is that it is like a public toilet, usefull in a pinch, but you never know who touched it last! Obviously tho everywhere else but here gets the national” 9.30 update.

The footage used in the 4.30 news is the same loop day in day out also, not sure if it the same as morning news? But its stale they need different shots, they should do shots from all the states, have it chagge on different days. Though it may confuse people. A shot of commonwealth avenue in canberra would be great! not the one they use in political crosses but, there stale also.

We do get a 10.30 during the 4 weeks over xmas, coz prime news take time off during that period, we still get our weather updates. Do you Get a sports update? at about 9.50?? we used to , but now get a weather update with Daniel Gibson who works for Prime and seven. Seven V8’s and prime weather, they do they regional updates right throughout victoria and NSW, all out of canberra studios.
