Last week Immigration Minister Amanda Vanstone presented the first of two Chaser Best Of episodes, and this week it got the Australian Story treatment with Caroline Jones hosting. Her intro and outro have been edited together above.

Thank god you’re speaking in tongues

It was less then a month ago that Channel Nine was claiming to be the first in Australia to offer what they called “television downloads”, but were actually just PC-only one week rentals of McLeods Daughters, well not only were they not the first, they were about seven months off the mark.

And no, I’m not talking about my feeble attempts (here and here) to give away episodes of the Chaser. It turns out that the SBS show Speaking in Tongues was offering Mac and PC compatible downloads the day after broadcast from back in November last year.

I just can’t believe I never picked up on this, either way Speaking in Tongues is still on iTunes, and holding strong in the top 30 Australian podcasts.

Tim, who was involved in the Speaking in Tongues podcast also points out that the last episode of Thank God You’re Here is also available for download.

There’s been a lot of discussion about the whole newsreaders standing up issue (here, here and even Jeremy Clarkson got in on it). Well for a different perspective here is the opening sequence to “SF Tagesschau”, the Swiss public broadcasters nightly news.

Huge thanks to Christian for this video, and I’ll post some stunning network idents from Switzerland soon as well.

(Resynced versions for: iPod and H.264, thanks Kenny!).

Tonights episode of The West Wing won an Emmy for outstanding directing for a drama series and also happens to be the first episode I ever saw of the show. Because the ABC is airing two episodes at once viewers are in the unique situation of watching the finale of season four and the start of season five in one sitting tonight.

Basically the Presidents daughter has just been kidnapped and enacting the 25th Amendment he removes himself from office, and because there is no vice president the Republican speaker of the house takes over as president.

The first video is a promo for tonights episode, and the second is the end of last weeks episode along with those dual credits.

(Last time the 25th was used was in 2002 when Cheney took over the powers of the president while Bush got a colonoscopy).

I have to admit I’m not that big of a soccer fan, but if SBS’s enthusiasm is anything to go by its hard not to resist its lure. The network has gone all out for the World Cup, and why wouldn’t they, its got to be the most exciting quadrennial event the station gets to air, and the craziest ratings month they are likely to see until South Africa hosts it in 2010.

SBS totally rebranded its on air presentation for the World Cup and these are the new idents they’ve been running.

It may have been a ‘Best Of’ episode, but the Chaser certainly gave us a reason to watch this week. Immigration Minister Amanda Vanstone played the role of bookends to this weeks episode with her intro and outro (edited together above).

The show may not be getting Wedge-esque ratings, but its certainly being watched by some people who matter. Its definitely starting to play the role of an “Australian Daily Show” for our political/media scene.
