Australian breakfast television news programme Sunrise received a major refresh this morning with new branding and a new set. The new look is neither a great step forward or back from the old, its just different enough that people might notice, but not enough of a significant improvement that anyone will really care.

Next time maybe..

It’s Breakfast time for ABC2, digital gets serious.

Long time morning television rivals Sunrise and Today will face new competition from Monday morning, with the much anticipated launch of ABC News Breakfast.

The new service fronted by Virginia Trioli and Barrie Cassidy (formerly Peter Lloyd) will run weekdays between 6-9am on ABC2. With the resources, and the reputation of the ABC behind this new program, its likely to carve out an audience under whelmed by the commercial networks offerings.

It should also do wonders for the publics increasing recognition of ABC2 as a distinctly separate offering to ABC1, with the recent Paralympics also helping the networks impressive audience growth.

All this of course showing that one thing, and one thing only is going to drive the take up of digital in Australia: content!

Channel 9 is no longer the one, the dramatic fall, the “spiritual death” if you will of Australia’s once favourite television network is the subject of Gerald Stone’s new book, Who Killed Channel 9? The Death of Kerry Packer’s Dream Machine.

Stone was on this mornings Weekend Sunrise talking about the book, the possible movie adaptation, morale at Nine and why it matters who owns and runs our television broadcasters.

Samantha Armytage has taken over Lisa Wilkinson’s role on Weekend Sunrise alongside Dear or No Deal host Andrew O’Keefe.

In today’s broadcast she was joined by Seven Brisbane’s Talitha Cummins on news reading duties, but I’m not sure if that is a permanent change.

Sunrise relaunched its look yesterday, the above videos introduce the new set; take you on a tour of their new home; and talk about the new graphics along with showing off the new weather respectively.

Sunrise has never been about news for me, and Seven probably planned it that way, I still find the subtle humour and drama of the “cast” the most interesting part of the show. It reminds me of Aaron Sorkin’s Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, and while the behind the scenes probably aren’t quite as dramatic I’d like to think it would make for just as interesting a show.
