Picture this.. you’re in Belgium, and you’ve got a craving for some Arrested Development, what do you do? You flick onto KanaalTwee (translation: Channel Two). This Belgian television station has been on the air since 1995 and is available over cable and satellite.
Above are stitched together start and end break bumpers to give you an idea of the KanaalTwee brand. After the jump are two promos and a chance to see how they interrupt credits in another part of the world. So keep reading..

TV in Flanders is great. The cable stations show almost back to back imports and it’s all in english with subtitles. Good look here from KannalTwee. één (one) has great (British-created) presentation too.
Interestingly, Belgium TV still employs a general policy of not broadcasting any programmes in the mornings. Most channels show webcam views of around Europe or radio station studio cams (whilst playing out the radio audio) up until noon. Others show quizes and sms message boards.

That’s true, but we simply can’t afford to make big local productions. Don’t get me wrong, we do have some local productions but not that much. Most of them are Flemish versions of reality TV shows (such as Big Brother, The Dog Whisperer and so on) or Flemish versions of quizzes (such as Deal or No Deal). Locally produced cop shows in the style of Taggart are also popular among both the commercial and public broadcasters.
I don’t mind watching foreign stuff though, that’s why we’re a little bit better at speaking English than people from countries who dub foreign TV shows. We don’t dub our programs and I’d like to keep it that way.
KanaalTwee however is not that great. Their idents are nice and creative, but they always air US series like Veronica Mars, The O.C. and Charmed. They’re all the same.

That’s true. Apart from some children’s programming, phone-in quizzes and SMS service ads they don’t. But why would they do it differently? They make loads of money doing these things. They’re commercial television stations and they want to maximize their revenue. Even if that involves ripping off people who have time to watch television all day…
How funny to see Home And Away on there. As for the no morning programming, I find that so odd. In Australia, some of the biggest network battles are over the 6am-9am (Sunrise on 7 v. Today on 9) and 9am-11am (The Morning Show on 7 v. Mornings with Kerri Ann on 9 v. 9am with David & Kim on 10) timeslots.
Thanks for the back-up Pieter. I genuinely enjoy Belgian TV. Mostly because I can watch almost all of it in my native language, but also because of the feel I get from the channels themselves. The typically relaxed nature of Belgium and it’s people seems to be reflected in the style of it’s TV.
The breakbumpers/idents and the promo package and the ECP. Splendid presentation. It’s so different. The idents are quite funny.

I guess we don’t turn on our television in the morning. Yeah, kids do, but we don’t. We don’t even have a breakfast show…

On the other end of the spectrum, you’ve got this stuff:

They just couldn’t come up with anything better…
I have an update ! Kanaaltwee is going to have another look at the end of this month, because of the ratings, they weren’t very good. So they decided to have another look and even another name. Their new name will be 2BE (with an even uglier logo. Kanaaltwee has always been the channel with the coolest breakbumpers,… but I also think the music/teenagechannel JIM tv has quite nice breakbumpers to, but it’s more for teenagers.
Indeed, JIM is a teenage oriented music channel. You can check the idents/bumpers at http://www.sevenproductions.be which is the company who did them.
