The ABC is celebrating 50 years of television tonight with a 90 minute special. As part of the lead up they’ve been running old idents from the past half century.
Personally the 50’s and 90’s are my favourite, the 80’s seem very, well 80’s and the 70’s are easily the most confusing, but then again I wasn’t alive for that decade.

Thanks for posting these! Although would be nice if all of them were in the podcast feed not just the 1990’s one 🙂
I wish ITV did something like this when it had it’s 50th last year!
..and very Campy/Funny especially the “Apples” 70’s one. 😛 😆
Those 70s ones are just plain scary!
My favourite was the 80s ones – I remember that they used to have idents from various states as well, with “iconic” places featured. Initially the state idents were only shown in the relevant state (I think) but after a while the “best” of them went national.
Interesting that most of the early idents don’t actually feature the lissajous!
The 70’s ones were idents?!
It seems Australian television between the early and sixties and the late seventies was a world away from what we had in the UK! What a laid-back attitude!
WOW thanks for this. Its great to go down memory lane which pretty usual for me as I love Australian history.
I like the 1980’s idents. They were nice & simple and showed how different the ABC is to the other Free To Air channels. I didn’t think they would be so laid back in 1970’s but who cares anyway. lol
I think Channel 7, 9 & 10 should of done the same thing and showed all their old idents from the 1950’s to the present!!
Once again thanks for loading these up.
Thanks for these, John. Wonderful nostalgia here. The ’70s ones are just so weird and corny, but I love them for that (“I’m the man from Auntie.”). But my favourites are the ones from about ’88-’95 – that glass logo is so beautiful (stuff Windows Vista when you’ve got the ABC).
I do love the ’60s one – “The good looking Australian.” wonderful! 😀
Nice, but I wouldn’t mind seeing a couple more if you have them (I like the early 2000’s one and the weird ’80s electric one)
It’s great that they brought out the archive, but, a bit of a shame they framed them with modern graphics :-(.
Yup.
I wonder why they cropped the idents to 16:9
They could have shown them with the black bars on the sides.
I remeber the 80’s ones very fondly. The same tune was on all of the videos I used to watch as a kid in the 90’s, ‘Bananas in Pyjamas’ etc. Same with the BBC’s ‘ribbons’ logo.
ABC TV was Youth, Youth from Triple J, Rage or FLYtv,
jtv Fidays 11.25pm, just before Rage and jtv Saturday Satudays 9am on ABC TV, then jtv XL, Tuesdays 9pm on ABC2
Your collection of the 50 years idents are awsome! But… there’s one more thing missing… Could you send me the 2002 ident (not the everyone’s lissajous ident) rebroadcasted in 2007, please? I’m waiting.
