The one thing I hate about ABC News Breakfast. (Plus, all the stuff I like about it).

ABC News Breakfast has an image problem.

ABC News Breakfast has been on air for about six months now, and the more I watch it, the more I find myself enjoying it.

It’s very much ‘radio on the television’, with rolling news, interviews, weather and quite literally radio on the television when they cross to interviews around the country being conducted on various ABC radio stations.

Available on the digital only ABC2, or streamed live online, its a fresh change from the infotainment formats adopted by its rivals. It presents itself as an honest and often frank outlet for news, with the daily look at the front pages of the papers often devolving into an interesting analysis of the media.

The programmes Twitter page; @breakfastnews has become essential tracking during the broadcast, with insight from the shows producer about whats coming up, whose running late, and what’s going on behind the scenes, it’s easily one of the first actually useful applications of Twitter I’ve seen a TV show use.

But now, back to the title of this post.. The one thing I hate about ABC News Breakfast is the entire branding of the programme, and its the one tip of my hat I’ll give to rival Sunrise. “ABC News Breakfast” is not only a clunky name, but the on-air design, sets and graphics don’t do the show any justice.

The whole thing needs a refresh, it could really look a lot better, because if there’s one thing we all know, people judge you on how you look, especially when your taking up 40 inches of space on my living room wall.

I agree with everything that was said in this blog post!

‘ABC News Breakfast’ smashes ‘Today’ and ‘Hey Hey It’s A Weekday’ (aka, ‘Sunrise’) as far as cold, hard information is concerned! The set and graphics don’t really bother me that much, but maybe they could call the show just ‘News Breakfast’?

You might think that the graphics of ABC Breakfast is quite ugly..
But TV for me in Hong Kong has faced this problem for years and years!
Take a look at TVB(Televison Broadcast Limited) HD Jade Channel right here:

This is a soap opera in 2008 broadcasted and produced by TVB!
They are using billions of dollars to develop a HD channel just for broadcasting these piece of ugly programmes!

The set is OK, if dull, but that opening sequence is just awful, even by the ABC’s low standards. Yellowish-brown blocks? What?

i love ABC News Breakfast…but i completely agree that the titles and music are AWFUL! while we need to remember that the funds for this program are next to nothing (with the money being taken from other areas of the ABC in order to fund it) surely they could have come up with something better? Even just a mashup of footage would have been better. I hope all of ABC News rebrands soon, including Breakfast. this is the only area where ABC News falls down compared to the other networks.

That is just awful. Amateurish at best. The music is flat but the real wreck here is the titles. They are so bad…

There’s an opportunity here for ABC to make a major re-branding of the entire news programming and unify all under one single look. The current presentation was unveiled on 2005, so in early 2010 at best, there’s a chance for a new, improved image.

I don’t like the package, the titles look cheap like something they would do in the 1990’s, especially during the coming up sequence. And the music is too sombre for that time of morning.

They should be embracing the fact that they sail close to ABC Radio’s wind a little more – I’ve heard this purported as a reason to love the program multiple times over the past six months.

It’d be nice to see the ABC Radio news theme (updated for the ABC2 audience?) as a theme for this show…

They must’ve used 3D Studio Max or Cinema 4D to create those titles because they’re craptacular.

“Terrible!” – The New York Times
“BOO! BOO!” – The Sydney Morning Herald

I’ve not ever noticed the themes, idents and music: it’s not the reason I watch a serious news programme, I have to say.

The point of the programme is to offer real news; not entertainment with pretty music and slick graphics masking vacuous content. I’m all for substance over form: who’d care more about the latter but those infected with commercial media’s tricks to fake integrity?

Not at all interested in slick graphics/themes etc just love news without all the stupid laughter and comments from the hosts on the commercial channels. JUST GREAT keep up the good work
