Summer Heights High will have its UK premiere on BBC Three later this month. The show which had a successful run on ABC1 last year, went on to become this countries highest selling television series on DVD ever.

BBC Three, along with HBO in the United States acquired the rights to the show earlier this year, with both networks keen to point out the shows cult status and high profile fans, with the BBC’s press release noting that “fans include Kylie and Dannii Minogue, Nicole Kidman, Barry Humphries, Rachel Griffiths and Trey Parker.”

Having recently finished watching the BBC Three comedy Gavin and Stacey I’m confident that Summer Heights will fit perfectly onto the networks schedule, and with its target audience.

BBC Three got a complete rebrand in February, dumping the old logo and the beloved and iconic blobs. The new look was developed by Red Bee, and although on first glance the whole feel could be mistaken for an SMS ad, on further viewings a depth begins to appear, and you kind of start to like it.

The £380,000 rebrand is part of the channels repositioning to take itself beyond being just a television broadcaster. Red Bee say the idents are meant to “make it feel a more populated and alive place”, basically a visual representation of Facebook-like communities, including their own Sims like characters.

And while the idea of big media embracing user-generated content, and saying stuff like “web 2.0″ usually drives me crazy, BBC Three seem to be pulling off a nice balance, and at least their taking a risk, and in the process appearing incredibly progressive.

The six new idents are above, but ten more videos await you after the jump, including promos, the 60 second news and viewer uploaded intros.

BBC Three relaunched its whole brand last month, and these are a selection of the old-look idents, including the first video above, which is the “blobs” final adieu just before the new look arrived.

These Aardman inspired spots have been on-air since the networks launch in 2003, and while I’m not often a fan of purely CGI idents, as they often create stale nothingness, these are quite an exceptional concept, often funny and beautifully executed.

BBC Three is the network responsible for bringing Little Britain to television, along with the short lived but awesome architecture series Dreamspaces.

More of Dead Ringers’ take on the idents of the United Kingdom. The first video is actually Dead Ringers own creation of a BBC One ident, and not just a voice over like usual (I tried to think of some BBC One/Number 2 joke but you get the idea).

Just some more BBC Christmas idents, I really like the whole formula for the BBC Three idents, and this Xmas variant works perfectly. Also there is another version of the BBC Two ident I showed a few posts ago, I think the lighting is very cool, and this time one of the firefly/comet things hit the ‘camera’.

This is a fantastic BBC Two ident, the execution of the idea is really well done, and the burning BBC Two logo in the corner at the end is a nice touch too. This is the ident that ran before last weeks Top Gear and the opening sequence of that has been included.

And for those of us in Australia, Top Gear starts tonight on SBS so hopefully this will pique your interest for it.

Finally another BBC3 ident for you, and I think it was worth the wait, this one actually got an audible laugh out of me. I really love the concept of the BBC3 idents, and initially the whole ‘blobs’ thing didn’t appeal to me, but its totally grown on me. (Thanks Graham).

This was the only BBC Three ident I captured on my trip, I did see a few others though, and while there not my favourite, they are pretty cool, and seem to be reflective of BBC Three as a channel.

I like it how they introduce the BBC Three box logo in different way, like it dropping into the screen or being revealed with a transition like it is in this one. The music is very cool, and I love the way they use audio from all different places as the voices for the blobs.

I’m also experimenting with my video encoding, so could you tell me which version (bigger or smaller) looks and sounds the best on your computer, and which you prefer. I work on a Mac so it can be hard to tell how the rest of the world see’s things.
