Inbetween Magic have created this excellent promo for Belgium based channel Prime. Set to the sounds of American folk music, this dramatic spot uses the innocence of toy figurines to distill the drama of the networks programming slate.

A great idea well executed, and with a heap of spin-off potential.

British network Virgin 1 launched in 2007 as the flagship general entertainment channel of the newly rebranded Virgin Media (formerly NTL Telewest).

However with Virgin Media offloading its channel group to British Sky Broadcasting earlier this year, the new owners decided to ditch the Virgin brand (perhaps understandably from their point of view) and relaunch it as simply Channel One.

During a recent episode of Oprah (yeah thats right) I came to the realisation that Denmark might just be the coolest place on Earth, that said I’ve never been.

And if these messed up idents for public broadcaster DR2 are anything to go by, it’s probably also a very creative, perhaps absurd place.

According to Wikipedia the DR2 channel is something of a Danish version of BBC Four which might go someway to explaining the playfully insane and visually pleasing eight idents contained in the video.

The amusingly dirty HBO animated sitcom The Life & Times of Tim makes its UK debut this month on Virgin 1. To promote the show, a very animated Richard Branson is featured in a series of promos with Tim, demonstrating a very creative way to market an imported programme while adding a local feel.

Portugal’s oldest television network RTP1, got itself a new on-air look last month, inspired by the channels clunky logo, and perhaps just a little by SimTower.

Surprisingly this ident is only a one off, but with such a unique concept, it could’ve so easily been expanded to include any variety of multi levelled environments…

Update: and it looks like they will be, with a new version making its debut this month, see second video above.

Based on a music video for Dutch group Kraak & Smaak, the same directors have repurposed the flip-book-meets-real-world concept for this series of idents for Fox owned Italian channel Cult.

According the channel, the idents are “an intriguing game of perspectives in which the protagonist is the claim of the channel: TV or not TV?.”

For a channel which describes itself as “curious, nonconformist and irreverent”, this trippy collection of mildy confusing idents, and an equally strange slogan all somehow works perfectly.

Germany’s ZDF (aka Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen) combines the Chinese landscape with Olympic athleticism, along with the obligatory cultural reference in the form of a flying dragon for this slick branding of their Games coverage.

Olympics broadcast branding has been a bucket full of cliches so far. And while the BBC’s incredibly unique take on the Games has been a much needed dose of fresh air, Norway’s national broadcaster NRK have delivered a nice spin on the usual slow motion althetes imagery with this Heroes-meets-300 inspired spot.

Corporación Radiotelevisión Española, or RTVE, is the state owned public broadcaster of Spain, operating eight television networks (including one just for classical music broadcasts), and six radio stations. Unlike the ABC or the BBC however, RTVE is financed with a combination of government funding and advertising.

Last week RTVE revealed its new branding, bringing together its aging brand into a “unified and common graphic language”. And although the new look isn’t expected to launch on-air until later in the year, the above video gives a thourough overview of the new look broadcaster, from its logos to stationary.

Somewhat surprisingly these idents from Irish broadcaster RTÉ Two date all the way back to 2004, which in the world of design seems like decades ago.

And while Irish viewers may very well be sick of them, design wise they’ve stood up to fickle ravages of modernity for nearly four years now, something most on-air looks could only wish for.

These idents were created by Piranha Bar, with 3D and compositing MV75.

TV2 Nyhetskanalen is Norway’s first round the clock news network, its operated by commercial broadcaster TV2 and has been on the air just over one year.

The above is a selection of the stations on-air look, but compared to the outstanding branding of Norway’s national broadcaster NRK, aren’t really that great.

And while I know Australia does have its own news network in Sky News, surely its time a free-to-air alternative launched, and if the ABC doesn’t get the funding to launch one, perhaps its time Seven launched a news channel, the name itself is crying out for some word play.. Seven 24?

Even New Zealand is about to get a free to air news channel at the end of the month.

So far on this blog I have managed to feature European television from Norway, Belgium, France, Denmark, Switzerland, and the UK. Which considering how little Australian content is on this site, shows just how lazy I am, and just how proactive and generous my readers are (thanks again!).

Well we now have another European country we can add to that list: Sweden, thanks to Simon who has supplied me these videos from SVT (thats Sveriges Television) the license fee funded national broadcaster of everyones favorite high tax paying country.

I’ve always been fascinated by Sweden and its literally at the top of my “next holiday” list. I don’t know what my attraction is, maybe its the Saab’s, maybe its the The Knife, whatever it is I can’t wait to hopefully visit for myself sometime soon.

Enough about my travel plans though, these videos are a mix of promos, idents and programming from SVT1 and SVT2, for a run down of whats in each video…

The first video is from SVT1 and contains promos and idents, as well as the start of the main news program Rapport and an ident for SVT drama.

In the second video from SVT2 we see titles from various news programs as well as some of the Christmas branding which includes a long shot on a cup of Glögg.

Video number three starts with another news program (which seems to have some story about Saab’s in the opening), along with various idents and a promo for the SVT HD service.

The final video begins with a promo for UR, Sweden’s educational broadcaster followed by more news clips and finishing up with one of those multi network billboards.

You’ll notice throughout these videos, that like the Norwegians the Swedish seem to enjoy using the live talking head continuity announcers.

These are a series of openers from various news programs from the Norwegian national broadcaster NRK. The shows in order of appearance above are RedaksjonEN, Standpunkt, Urix and Østnytt.

The entirely CGI sequences keep away from the usual television news trap of using old footage to create drama and instead get an incredible amount of creative mileage from a small dot from the NRK logo that begins each show.

There’s a consistency here I love that makes each program distinctively NRK, which is something that lacks among the various news shows of say the ABC (7.30, Lateline, etc), however its probably debatable as to whether such cohesion between sepereate broadcasts is needed.

Virgin 1 launched last night in the UK, it’s the new flagship channel of the Virgin Media group. Available on terrestrial, satellite and cable services, its set to compete directly with Sky One.

The best of whats available on Virgin 1 currently seems to be Seinfeld and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (watch if you haven’t!). The networks slogan is “proper telly”, and I’ll be interested to see how they follow up that claim. The build up to the launch didn’t exactly blow me away, and the magnetism theme of the first ident kind of reminded me of this, that said, its all early days still.

It was only a few days ago I was posting about Norway’s TV2, and if you liked that, you should love this.. From the same country that brought you the aerosol spray its the Norwegian national broadcaster; NRK, or Norsk rikskringkasting.

Let me explain the contents of the videos, and a bit more after the jump..

The first video is the opening of Dagsrevyen, the most popular news program in Norway which according to Wikipedia gets nearly a million viewers (for a country of 4.7m thats huge!).

The second video is the opening of a debate for the 2007 local elections between the Prime Minister, represented by a rose, and the opposition leader, represented by an apple (spoiler alert: Labour won Trondheim).

The third video is from a weekly sports magazine show, and the final video appears to be a kindly older lady reading out whats on television that night.

The NRK is currently made up of three television stations, with a fourth launching in December, and a number of radio stations. NRK is financed by license fees, and although they have ads on their website I believe the television stations remain commercial free.

All in all it seems pretty impressive for a country with a population one-quarter that of Australia’s.. maybe license fees aren’t such a bad idea.

I’ve learnt a lot more about Norway than I thought I would from writing this blog. I’ve learnt that Norway it isn’t (despite what I thought) part of the European Union, that it ranks number #1 in the UN Human Development Index, and now apparently its the most peaceful country on earth!

Picture this.. you’re in Belgium, and you’ve got a craving for some Arrested Development, what do you do? You flick onto KanaalTwee (translation: Channel Two). This Belgian television station has been on the air since 1995 and is available over cable and satellite.

Above are stitched together start and end break bumpers to give you an idea of the KanaalTwee brand. After the jump are two promos and a chance to see how they interrupt credits in another part of the world. So keep reading..

France 2 is the largest public television station in France, it was also the first channel in the country to go colour in 1967, and is in closest competition with TF1.

In the above videos you’ve got the closest thing French television have to idents, their “publicité” spots, followed by a movie promo, two news openers from throughout the day and a primetime line up.

Thanks to design agency Stupid, and the people at TV2 Denmark I’m happy to show off their Christmas idents from late last year.

George: What is Holland?
Jerry: What do you mean, ‘what is it?’ It’s a country right next to Belgium.
George: No, that’s the Netherlands.
Jerry: Holland is the Netherlands.
George: Then who are the Dutch?

That quote pretty much sums up my geographic ignorance when it comes to Europe, but thanks to this blog, Wikipedia, and the kind people from around the world who send me local idents, I like to think I’ve learnt a few things. Like how I got informed Norway isn’t part of the EU in my post about the other TV2, and how the Latin name for Switzerland is Confœderatio Helvetica in my post about SF1.

So what have I learnt about Denmark then? Well, it turns out Greenland is actually Danish territory, and it has one of the oldest monarchies in the world, second only to Japan. And, oh yeah, and its also apparently the happiest place on earth!

This blog is about television idents, right? Sorry about my mid week Chaser-tangents, how about this though? Another installment of France from afar.

Instead of looking at a specific French television station though these videos promote the whole French national broadcaster; France Télévisions ranging from France Ô to 5.

Its similar, but a little more dramatic to what the BBC and Channel 4 do.

The whole thing is incredibly elegant, and this combined with the fact I saw Paris, je t’aime last night makes me wish I’d spent more time in Paris.

For the first time in the history of 24 hour news networks, four global broadcasters have come together to produce the same program. The event was part of a campaign to free kidnapped journalist Alan Johnston who went missing one month ago yesterday.

Jeremy Bowen who anchored the special started by saying “about the only good thing to come out of the last month is the way Alan’s colleagues, especially here in the occupied Palestinian territories, have rallied around him.”

A commendable use of resources, something that should be considered again for any number of worthy things.

Along with the Benelux countries, Scandinavia is high on my list of groupings-of-three-nations I really want to visit (Sweden for the Saabs, Belgium for Antwerp).

Thanks to Hans I’m happy to be able to show off some of Norway’s idents from the countries largest commercial broadcaster TV2. In my research for something interesting to say about Norway I discovered that the country is rated #1 in the UN Human Development Index which isn’t too shabby at all (Australia is #3).

(It looks like BBC Two will be relaunching their idents, I’ll post whatever I can get my hands on soon.)

These clips are from ARTE, or Association Relative à la Télévision Européenne.

The first video is “a promo for an evening schedule + one promo + ident + explanation for “bicanal” (viewers can chose to listen to the program either in french or in the original language)” while the second video is “the channel opening at 2 pm with a promo for what is coming next and an ident”. ..those three things are about the extent of my Swiss knowledge; we all know about the passport countrol and neutral stance Switzerland has taken, it turns out the countries latin name is Confœderatio Helvetica (which explains the .ch domain), and Carl Jung, who briefly had a crush on Freud was born there.

I’ve never been to the country, but its always interested me, and thanks to Christian I’m proud to be able to show you these beautiful idents, of what looks like a beautiful country from the Swiss public broadcaster SF. Its been a while since I liked a set of idents quite as much as these.

There’s been a lot of discussion about the whole newsreaders standing up issue (here, here and even Jeremy Clarkson got in on it). Well for a different perspective here is the opening sequence to “SF Tagesschau”, the Swiss public broadcasters nightly news.
