Dreamspaces was a short lived BBC Three documentary series that I fell in love with a few years back, and like every short lived show, it managed to break my heart. I loosely compare it to Top Gear because for someone not that into architecture it had me enthralled in a way I didn’t think a show about buildings (or cars) could, and because of the brilliant production and beautifully shot stories.
Presented by David Adjaye, Justine Frischmann and Charlie Luxton it was part architecture geek out, part travel show, and always showed the emotional connections we have to our surroundings. To this day I still have high on my list of travel destinations places that were visited by the Dreamspaces team, and no segment from the show changed my thinking more then Justine Frischmann’s look at Brazil’s planned capital; Brasilia.
As a long time resident of a planned city myself, I have this show to thank for my heightened appreciation of the design in which I live, and its a credit to the quality of the show (from its opening sequence in the first video, to the story on Brasilia in the second) that the places presented on it have stayed with me as long as they have.

I don’t remember that show, however I wished I had watched it now. That Brasilia segment was very good.
reply
I’d forgotten about this show – I used to love it

Thanks for this! I loved the series when it showed on BBC World. It’s what the BBC was all about, for me.
reply
such a great concept for a show. so well executed love it.
reply
Wasn’t this one of the first new series on BBC3? I seem to remember it being included in the previews during BBC Choice. Never seen it but it looks great.
reply
I used to watch this show on BBC World and it was something different. It’s a shame that shows like this don’t get made anymore. Come on BBC, bring it back.
reply
Love the dynamic nature of the report…

I’ve been looking for Dreamspaces on DVD, Ebay, and on the torrent sites with no luck. I’m surprised that it’s not available considering all the attention Adjaye has been receiving in the press. I would love to get a copy of this and another series called Rock School with Herbie Hancock. I wish all of the BBC shows were available on DVD.
reply
Thank you sooo much for this. I have looked far and wide for information on this much-loved series. Why it’s not available is beyond me. All I (we) can do is hope and wait.

Does anyone know the artist who was in the opening theme/ident or was it just made for the show? Help please.
reply
Is it possible to have more videos uploaded from this show???
reply
The artist for the opening theme was a remixed version of “Everyones a loser” by I Monster
If anyone has access to TheBox.bz torrent site there are 9 episodes about to be uploaded including the Brasilia one
reply
Does anyone have the bit where Adjaye talks to Niemeyer ?
reply
Listened to “everyone’s a loser” by i monster, doesn’t seem close to the opening theme soundtrack, any clue on who might the artist be? btw, loved the show

Hey! I don’t know who the opening theme might be of, but some tracks used in the series belong to Bebel from the disc Tanto Tempo

Just a random bit of information: this show had two series, one in 2003 (the first six episodes) and another the next year (the last six episodes). Just something for the obsessive-compulsive like me. Hee.

Hi, I’ve uploaded the missing 2 episodes of Dreamspaces to thebox.bz
These include the Fukuoka episode that Jinho is looking for
reply
I’m so thrilled to see this show again! It’s my all time favorite on BBC. It doesn’t only tackle anything architecture, but the way they deliver the show is an art by itself.
reply
Neil: I can´t seem to create an account at thebox.bz
Can´t imagine why…Could you upload the missing episodes here?
Thanks buddy

Great show, shame about the female presenter though, I find her to be a little contrived. David Adjaye is one of my favourite architects, and a real inspiration.
reply
Thank you very much for making these videos available for download. Dreamspaces was the best program on BBC, followed by TopGear. I am really sad that DreamSpaces is no longer on the air though.
reply
thank you very very much for you …

Here’s something I bet you didn’t know. In the opening theme of the show the tunnel the trio (Justine, Charlie and David) are in is the entry tunnel from the Bank Station side of the Waterloo and City Underground Line in London. The flourescent lights on either side of the tunnel are a dead giveaway.
reply
Neil,
I’m with Santiago on this, I can’t access the other two episodes via thebox.bz please load them here if you can. Thank you so much for loading them, architecture via video is hard to come by at my library. I’ve also been looking for the series in the mind of the architect from abc in australia anyone have any suggestions?
reply
yaay i’ve been searchin for these episodes for so long this documentry what made me want to study architecture
reply
By any chance, can you please upload the missing episodes here? thebox.bz says I need an invite from someone to be able to sign up and I don’t know someone who has an account
Anyway, thanks for uploading these. Thank you!
